Default Shooting board - work in progress

After getting tired of getting crooked edges and blown out end grains while planing timber I started to do some googling and came across how to videos on making shooting boards. So I decided to do my take of one using what I had on hand in the man cave. Base is 12mm ply and 4.7 mm mdf for the top layer and a bit of 4x2 for the timber support I can use up to a No5 plane on this one and plane up to 600mm in length. All that is left to do once glue has set on the end support is to drill into it from the underside and put in a couple of 10mm dowels to help reinforce it. I also need to plane the surface the side of the plane will rest on to bring the top board in line with the bottom edge of the cutting iron.

All finished and working a treat just squared up this lid for a box i am making also liking how i can clamp work like this to it. Pictured is my no 5 stanley handy man and i reckon a 4-1/2 or 5-1/2 would be the bees knees with the wider cutters and bases on them

Looks like that is doing the job well for you. The only thing I would have done would be make it wider to support your workpiece better both on the bottom and against the fence. How is your fence attached to the base?

The front fence is attached to the board with glue and two 10mm dowels to help support it. I only made this one from scrap wood that I had on hand in the garage, I will be making another one at some stage when I have some more timber wide enough to make another shooting board that is wider but for now this one is working good and I did have that piece clamped to the front fence to help hold it while squaring it up.
