Smoother & adjusting hammer
G'day all
I just put the finishing touches to another Brigalow Krenov style plane, this time a 45mm smoother.
I also made up an adjusting hammer to go with it. The hammer is made from a 1/2" brass plumbing tee with a white oak handle made from scrap. A small piece of 1/2" bright bar to tap the blade and a piece of Brigalow I shaved into a dowel and ebonised for tapping the wedge.
The plane is fitted with a Ron Hock Blade with a mouth opening of around 10 thou. shavings are a bit under a thou and one of the attached photos shows the quality of the finish on a piece of cranky Aussie Cedar.

That is one fine-looking plane, and an interesting approach to a great looking hammer. Those wispy thin shavings are sooo satisfying.
The only query I'd have is the grain direction on the dai. It obviously isn't causing a problem now, but it might be something to keep an eye on as the plane gets used and becomes worn in.
Beautifully made.

Welcome back & well spotted. That is one of those things that generates a loud " bother ! " or words similar. By the time I had discovered what the " dai Had done to itself " it was too late so I decided to make an experiment of it and continue just to see how critical it really is, ( so far so good )
Love to hear how you have settled back in, drop me an email when you have time to spare.
Regards

That is one of the nicest take on a wooden hand planes I have seen. The lines are elegant, and the shaping of the wedge is very well executed. The texturing to the rear bun, is done with enough measure to be tactile while not being overdone.
I will keep trying to make my own planes, to lift to your inspirational work.

Thanks Helmut
I was thinking of making another wedge out of Ebonised Brigalow and colouring the blade black so that this plane matches the Jointer I made earlier.

I will also try setting this plane up without a chipbreaker to see how this works, as it could be useful info for your forthcoming blade purchase project.
