Wooden Mallet Design
IMG20160809105432.jpgIMG20160809105449.jpgIMG20160809105328.jpg
Have recently made a few different types of wooden mallets (mainly for the pleasure of just making nice looking tools) but it got me to thinking what the best design would be. I appreciate there are many different uses for mallets from the heavy persuader to the tapping mallet used to set the blades of wooden planes, but for general use, should the face of the mallet be round or rectangular, should it be made of hardwood or soft, what weight should they be, should the handle be made of wood with some flex to absorb some of the shock. Is there anything else I need to consider
Would appreciate learning from the experience that is evident throughout these forums
PS be gentle with me, it's my first time on these pages
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave
And welcome to the Ubeaut forum!
That is a nice mallet, and the construction has possibilities. For example, since you are glueing up laminations, rather than a wedged handle, you could have tapered the end. This would act like a dovetail to keep it locked in.
One of the important aspects of a mallet is the handle. I design mine to have two grip areas: a forward one for a "choked" hold. This reduced heft and increases control. Then there is a hold at the end of the handle for maximum weight. Each hold section is shaped to prevent the hand sliding. Here is an example ..

Thanks Derek, like the idea of two hand positions, makes a lot of sense.

Hi Dave,
I gotta a lot of respect for folk who make their own tools ...
Really nice work
If you are doing the short and long grip positions then you might find it helpful to angle the face of the head to ensure an angle of contact at 90 degrees ... could be tailored for each grip place individually.
Regards
Rob
