    Default Dominoing into Screws

So I was making up some workbench tops today and dominoing Tas Oak edging onto Karri tops with chipboard substrate, and plunged right into one of the screws fixing the Karri to the chipboard.

Trashed an 8mm cutter. The cutter still works on the chipboard, but on the Tas Oak - it is hard going and clearly stuffed.

Oh well I thought, it took until the third workbench top to make this mistake, and I was luckily enough not to do it on the first two. Anyway, put a new cutter on ready for more work.

    Break for lunch.

Back to the fourth workbench top. Crunch, did the same again.

Guess who has two damaged 8mm cutters. Meeeee!

I have images but feel to depressed and stupid to post them right now. But thought I would share in an attempt to talk myself into a better frame of mind before I do the next two tops.

Lesson learnt - don't place screws within 25mm of the edge on a job like this.

    Ow, that would have hurt.

Not as bad as my experience and I'll share it with you, just so you feel a bit better.

I cut a mortice in the wrong spot on a cabinet leg , that's okay I thought, I'll plug it with a tenon and glue it in. I didn't leave it long enough to dry and Domied the right spot - the glue was still wet and I forgot to clean glue off the cutter, then a few days later I remembered it, went back and it was rock solid on the cutter.

Thankfully I have a spare 8mm. The one I glued up still cuts but not so great.
I make things, I just take a long time.

Thanks Waldo - I feel a bit better now. But at least you did not immediately glue up your second 8mm cutter. I wonder if the glue wil eventually break out, or does it look like it's there for good?

It's Titebond III and it looks very much like it is there for good. I've been toying with taking it down to my saw sharpener bloke - if the cutters can be resharpened?

You can touch up the end cutters, but not the side cutters else you change the diameter of the mortise. I could be lucky with mine, I think only the end cutters were damaged so I will give sharpening a go. I'll get some pics up later after I'm done sanding and finishing.

Pretty much what I thought. A stuffed 8mm cutter anyone?

Waldo, try leaving it in some turp for a few day and clean it up with steel wool. Just an idea.

I didn't know that had a name... I've drilled into my finger before, right through the panel and stopped at the knuckle bone. Insert expletives here.

And at this rate I might start selling them to myself in economy 6 packs. Hmmm, six pack.
