    Default ROS choices and Sandpaper

You guys will love the Festool sander.

I have the 150/5 and the 150/3 ( this one is so old it is Festo).
Both bought from Ideal Tools and Anthony has always provided excellent service.

Typically I sand to 320 with Festool's Brilliant.

These lovely sanders get abused with some rough work doing rough sanding of hardwood slabs and oily African drums starting at 40# grit.

I started using Abranet mesh for the rough work. Their Heavy duty mesh is thick and twice the price. My Festool sandpaper would block up within a few minutes but the Abranet mesh keeps going for ages.

Above 100 grit on cleaner timber they do the same job.

A forum member sent me a range of Jost sandpaper. It has a grid pattern of holes so suitable for any sander.
They did an excellent job too.

At the moment I have Abranet 40, 60, 80, 120 Heavy duty. A mix of Abranet and Festool up to 400.

I highly recommend the backing pads from Festool and Mirka. About $5.00 each. Much cheaper than paying $80 to replace the Festool pad when you tear on a splintery edge or some fool tries sanding without sandpaper.

As much as I love my Festool 150s, I would prefer to use the Mirka Deros. It is easier to use on pieces that are round or odd shaped.

I attaced a few sample pics that you might find interesting.

Will the others last longer? Quite possibly. 2-3 times longer? I strongly doubt it.
I buy a lot of my resources from Smash repair places. Their work is perfection itself, so we could learn a great deal from this industry.

Yep, The ETS is great for flat panels, but the Mirka is hard to beat on everything else; I flick my CEROS around like it's an extension of my hand all the time.

There is no doubt a significant overlap in finishing technology in smash repairs and woodwork, but the differences are also profound. One reason for the wide range of “quality” abrasives available in the market is the enormously variable timbers with which we work; but not one of them really resembles panel beater’s bog filler. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that each would have its own, and quite different “ideal” abrasive. My observations working occasionally with builder’s bog as a filler, support this.

With regard to paying for longer lasting abrasives, in my experience, it often takes several minutes of wasted time to detect that a sanding disk has “gone” and needs to be replaced. If one type lasts twice as long as another, that alone means only half of that time is wasted.

    MDF and panel bog

I use it all the time! Speakers, kids furniture and bedroom accoutrement, plus anything that is painted by a client... such as blanket chests.

    Its magic.

(ah, yes, but IS it wood!???)

elanjacobs, woodPixel and Mr Brush, of course you’re all right — I guess it depends on what you’re doing and where you want to get to. I have built up quite a range of abrasives over the years of using my Festool; from eBay Asian cheap to high end. I also use MDF for projects and bog IS magic when needed. I use el cheapo, often as a result. All that said, when I get down to finishing a high end slab of quality timber, I’ll always turn to the best abrasives. Part of that may welll be just to enjoy the journey, but I’m convinced I get a better result, quicker with the tool using “the best” abrasive and resisting that oldest temptation in the book, to press too hard.

If you want a tip for cheap disks... drip a small amount of super glue into a hairline crack and sand immediately with your sander. Two things will happen; the crack will disappear, filled instantly with its own dust and the disk will be buggered with super glue contamination. Try it.

    Hi Everyone

Just had a look at the website myself as I am running the ETS150/3 and an RO150. For anyone who wants to give it a go without the commitment of a box of disks they have the free sample option. I have just ordered the 120 grit disk which also comes with their pack. If that works out well then I will be looking to expand my collection.

Got some Festool Granat discs from Totaltools in Sunbury. All clearance, some 50% off. There were more. More sure about other Totaltools stores.

Wonder how Total Tools got around the Retail Price Maintenance to sell the discs at below the price that TTS/Festool has set for them.

I believe Granat has been discontinued as it overlaps with one of the other papers. This is just to clear old stock

my experience has been that retailers have always been prepared to negotiate around the price of consumables, so perhaps consumables are not covered by Festool's pricing arrangements.

    Hi everyone,

I believe that Granat is still alive and well and is still on the Festool website. The new paper appears to be 48 hole paper whereas the older stuff was 8 or 16 hole paper. I have just purchased an RO150 and it has the 48 hole backing pad on it. My ETS150/3 still has the old 16 hole pad on it.

Maybe the 16 hole stuff was being sold on special to make way for the newer paper.

I am looking forward for the sample piece of Abranet to come in.

    Regards
    'Graham

This makes sense - as far as I know, Granat would have to be hands down the single most popular paper Festool have - I could see them getting rid of it if they were bringing out a direct replacement (e.g. Granat 2).

I'd be very surprised if they just dropped it

Maybe it was Rubin that was dropped , I know they've gotten rid of one of them because I got an email from Just Tools a little while ago
