I’ve had an ETS-EC 150/5 for about 3-4 years now, and no regrets. I have a stock of both Rubin and Granat sandpaper which work well on the machine of course. I’ve connected my shop vac and the dust collection is exceptional.
However, I suggest that you don’t feel locked into Festool’s abrasives alone. The Abranet abrasives, produced for the superb Mirka sanders that compete with Festool head-to-head are based on an open mesh and will therefore work on any sander, irrespective of its hole pattern. I’ve been using them for 6 months now; they’re pricey, even by Festool standards, but they really do last longer. I’m hooked.
As for higher grits above 6-800, dust extraction becomes less important and you can use almost any 150mm disks, including unperforated, without a problem.

The Sandpaper Man has confirmed that the 17 hole paper should be fine

Hi Damienol
I'd also suggest you try Abrunet abrasives. My experience is that:
- They cut a little bit faster,
- Perhaps one grit smoother,
- They last a lot longer, and
- Dust extraction might be even better !
The big advantage of the Festool is simply that they are nicer to use.
Cheers
Graeme

Will the mesh of the Abranet work with the velcro of the Festool ROS?

I couldn't say for sure, but I had heard it does - fdpeterg's post in my mind clearly indicates it does.
It could also be noted that Festool now have a similar product out, called Granat Net: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIwyjbG6k-8

Yes, Abranet is fully compatible with any Velcro-style hook base. It comes in both 125 & 150mm disks that will therefore fit virtually any ROS hole pattern, irrespective of the brand. Incidentally, they also supply it in rolls up to 150mm for use on drum sanders.
For those interested, self-adhesive substrate hook tape can be purchased in rolls from Zelfast Australia - Durable Industrial Hook & Loop Products for Trade - zelfast.com.au, up to 150mm wide. This can be used to convert virtually any old electric sander, no matter how ancient, to use these modern loop backed abrasives discussed here. Even without dust extraction, they seem to have excellent clog resistance.
The fact that Festool have now joined the “open mesh” party shows what a game-changer this stuff is.

Abranet looks like a very good alternative for the higher grits as they sell it in quantities of 10 instead of Festools 100

Indeed. Or I will just leave this here for anyone that might be curious about smaller lots of sandpaper: https://www.festoolnirvana.com/colle...es-assortments
Chip (who runs Festool Nirvana) can't ship outside of the USA.
Then again, one of several freight forwarders can.

+1 for Abranet, but sit down before you look at the price

Hi Elan
Retail prices for individual discs, 150 mm x 100 grit:
- Abranet - $1.28
- Festool - $0.92
- Bunnings - $1.58
I would have thought Abranet was good value for money, especially when considering longevity, speed and finish. Generic is rather expensive, in my view!
Cheers

Revcut Blue: $0.50 https://www.smashsupplies.com.au/sho...-150MM-7H.html
Will the others last longer? Quite possibly. 2-3 times longer? I strongly doubt it.

And you can buy even cheaper in bulk from Asia, but it kinda defeats a major feature of the Festool sander; its magnificent dust collection. If you are prepared to settle for a 7H pattern sander, why pay for a 17H Festool in the first place?
As for comparing prices (on truly Festool compatible papers) you must take care to compare longevity too. If Abranet outlasts Granat by 50%, which it easily does in my experience, it is actually cheaper.
Finally, there is the pleasure of using a top-class tool, running at its best.
