Default Bandsawn jewelry box for my wife.

Second attempt at making a bandsawn box. Mistakes were made and a lot was learned. Something to apply to my next attempt.

I posted previously here with a few problems (ugly glue line). The option I took to remedy it seems to have worked out nicely.

    • The finish didn't polish as nicely as I would have liked leaving a slightly matt finish. The white colouration in the "character marks" was from the various polishing compounds I used (car polish, EEE Ultrashine and brasso). I'd have been better off with one more coat of a thinned down Minwax WOP gloss. Any suggestions for next time?
    • I should have also used more adhesive when flocking the interior. A few spots were too thin and the flocking didn't adhere evenly. I also trusted to some painter's making tape to protect the work leading to a few small issues. Next time I'll just paint on the glue by hand and be careful.
    • When using a router roundover bit to round the edges of the front plates, one plate was a bit thin causing the bushing to go over the edge of the plate and I subsequently 'ate' a big chunk out of the front plate of one of the drawers. I debated whether to make the resulting hole a finger hole but eventually opted to replace the whole plate with a piece of offcut. Came out better that I hoped.
    • Had I thought of it in advance I might also have filled the void on the top with a powdered gemstone and epoxy material - or something else striking. As it is it stands as a nice "character mark".

Nice work. I love the use of the timber. It appears that a lot of thought went into what to make from that piece.

Are you sure that is only your second box?

    Cheers

Nice going on the box. Are these the first time that you tried flocking?

Yeah. First time flocking. Like I said - a few mistakes were made. The flocking was one of them.
