Default My daughter wants a bandsaw box

While at a homemade market today, my 5 year old spotted and really nice selection of bandsaw boxes. Unfortunately I didn't have the funds at the time to buy her one and then I realised how easy they LOOK (not saying they are easy) to be and that I have a nice piece of Padouk at home that I have been holding onto for something special.

My daughter qualifies as something special and I want to try something new so I thought I would have a crack at making on myself.

Before I get started, I only have a 1/2 inch rip blade on my bandsaw. What size blade whould I look at getting noting I will need to cut curves? I have the box drawn up on the blank but want to get it right so I might use a bit of pine for a test run.

Any advice for a bandsaw box beginner?

G'day Mate. Bandsaw boxes are a great experience and can also be adictive. I humbly suggest you try a local library for a book on the subject - your saw blade needs to be finer than what you have, an 1/8 inch I think, because the curving can be quite tight. Have fun.

Thanks Soth, I thought the blade might be a bit big. I think I'll go for something along the lines of 1/8 inch and around 10 tpi, does this sound right?

I'd go for more tpi - remember you won't have much room to move when sanding. I use 18/20 (?) tpi and an oscillating sander.

I have the timber selected, I have the lines all marked out and a fair idea of what to do, and looked at that site thanks, certainly clarified what I was planning, all I need to do is grab a new blade and it will be saw dust time.

I'll be sure to post pics as I go.

There was one in this forum but they seem to have been cleaned out. I'm pretty sure I know the way ahead now, I just need to pick up a new blade, find a scrap blank for a practice and let the sawdust begin.

Threads don't get cleaned out here ever, unless it's spam or doesn't belong here, more than likely the Display Options at the bottom of the Bandsawn Boxes Forum is only set to show threads for the last month

The first link here is the one I had in mind but the other two will have some good ideas or WIP as well
