    Default Leftovers

A bandsawn box has been on the to do list for a while and with leftovers from the pallet challenge it was time to have a go with no risk of wasting expensive timber.

It was a bit of a learning curve as I found that to close up the cut there needs to be a reasonably thin casing left but mine is quite thick so even though the case was flexible it would only close at the outside end. Some widening at one end and a bit of fill at the other gave an acceptable result for that.

The other thing is that shapes like this can be difficult to smooth. I bought a 14TPI 3mm blade part way through this but it gives a very ridgy cut and I wonder if all blades will do this or if there is something wrong with my set up eg too much set on the blade, irregularity on my bandsaw wheels or my technique is not right. Any tips gratefully accepted on both prevention of irregular surfaces and on sanding.

I have seen reference to someone using a modified electric toothbrush for sanding but am not sure how well they work – does anyone have any experience with them? (I do have an Ozito rotary tool but it’s a bit rubbishy as the speed control is dodgy and it always runs too fast).

Anyway, here are some pics, 1 WIP and the others finished. The wing being at an angle was meant to make it more aesthetic and also provide a handle where the tip protrudes past the body.

    Hi Bob,
Pretty good job for a first go and good design too.
Must have been a hoot making it.
    Regards

    Default Maybe a blade issue

Looks good, lots of fun there. A great first project.

I am a long way from an expert on bandsaw blade issues but the experience that I do have indicates that you may have a blade weld or manufacture problem. i bought an expensive tct bandsaw blade and found it cut roughly. When i carefully examined the blade I found the weld was bad - they had welded two teeth side by side! They had also kinked the blade. I sent it back and it was "fixed" but never as good as it should have been.

    Hope this helps.
