Why not give it a go?
Thought I might get into bandsaw box making after reading all the interesting threads on this and other forums. So this is my first attempt.
The object was not to start out to flash but more to see wether I had the correct gear and if not to see what I needed to add to my equipment, whilst at the same time not wasting any of my small stock of good timber.
The first thing I did was put a new blade on the bandsaw and tune it up (well worth the effort).
So there was an offcut of 90mm x 90mm merbau post lying in the corner so I attacked it the results are in the posted pics.
The major things I learnt from this little project were (not in any order of preference)
1) I will proberly need to purchase a bobbin sander or at the very least drum sanders for my drill press.
2) I need to purchase a finer bandsaw blade to aceive a smoother cut.
3) I need to purchase a decent fence for my bandsaw (I cut this one freehand)
Hmmm maybe this is not going to be as cheap a hobby as I thought.
Well I'll just have to make do in the meantime and I''ll make a couple of more over the coming weeks for practice.
Cheers Rumnut

bandsaw box
hi rumnut,
nice box for first try no you won't need a bobbin sander, if you use 1/8 14 tpi blade that will give you a reasonable smoothe cut and very little hand sanding, by the look of your box draw i think it needs to be rounded over to blend into the box carcass, i make my draw fronts about 10/12mm thick that gives me more wood to round over,

Nice looking box.
I also tried my first one. Needed a 50th birthday present.
Its not my design, found it on the web and liked the shape.
I can see many more of these in my future.
The timber is "Vexillum sepem agmen".
Looks like big fish jumping over a boat shape to me??

Its red felt from lady bunnings with gold glitter in it.
I didn't make ring holders or any of that inside the draws.
I used the part of wood I cut out of the draw to mark/cut the felt.
Then I sprayed contact adhesive onto the back of the felt. Didn't do a great job so I put real contact adhesive on the inside of the box with a ice cream stick.
When dried to tacky I put the sides in, then the bottom strip across.
After that cut any overlap with a scalpel and then rubbed corners with the handle of the plastic scalpel.
Then trimmed to tiny bits at the top with scalpel and used the end of the bottom strips and pushed that into the back of the box to move the draws forward.
The latin that I put above for the timber I am going to write on the bottom is "Standard fence column" (post comes out as post).
Hope that helps.

As it was my first I just used fence post.
I also forgot to take the back off first so its 2mm ply back there (am I meant to say that).
I pushed each box from the back to find the sweet spot to get the draw open and closed without sticking. Thats why the buttons don't line up, but that cool.
I didn't see a finished one, I found it as an outline in google images under bandsaw boxes.
Thinking of a big fur tree (cedar thing) style one, Each of the big branch lunps would get a box and the trunk would be a thin tall box where the opening would be in the side, give it some pins to hang stuff on and push back in. (does that make sense).

G'day Rumnut & _fly_
Thanks for posting your first attempts guys. The results are excellent and the finishes you have achieved using ordinary bits of wood is quite amazing. Keep them coming!
Rumnut - as a matter of interest what size blade did you use?
John T - you suggest using a 1/8" blade. Do you have any tips on setup so the blade does not roll off the wheels, as I have asked this question previously with nil feedback. I'm restricted to using a 1/4" blade at this stage due to this setup challenge.
Cheers.

The blade I used was a 6mm 6TPI. As it was a new blade it cut like butter & I pehaps went a tad to quick as the cut was suprisingly course. However the object at the start was to learn something & I did.
SHMBO has already claimed it so I probably will have it for a while to look back on.

HI RUMNUT,
What i do when i fit a new blade on the bandsaw to cut my bs boxes i hold a rub stone on the back corners of the blade, it helps to turn sharper corners with less burn marks i hope helps.
