WIP Swagman
I am attempting the Swagman Pattern from a book I purchased a few years back called Inatasia Down Under:

Trying to get the pupils of the eyes using a piece of ebony took me a bit of thought because I knew that trying to scroll or bandsaw such a small radius would be difficult so I came up with a simple solution....
1) I traced the pattern of the iris of the eye onto a larger piece of timber I wanted for the iris of the eye.
2) I then turned down the ebony to the same radius of 1 of my Forstner Bits which was close to the size I wanted for the pupil.

3) Placed the ebony cylinder into the drilled hole then bandsawed the iris shape together with cutting the pupil timber

I still have to cut the eyebrows then start sanding and shaping.........

A WIP is not complete unless I also show the "problems/mistakes" along the way.
The pattern book instructed to cut all the face pieces out of the 1 bit of timber. I used the thinnest kerf band saw blade available but didn't take into account just how much more timber is removed by the blade along all those creases in the Swaggys' face. You can see the poor fit due to big gaps either side of the eyes.....

To try and rectify this I traced out the extent of an area I needed to fit and redrew the crease lines while making slight adjustments to the shape of the pieces. The shape of the individual pieces in the face are not critical as long as the outer limit of all the pieces when placed together fit the required space and it still gives the impression of the creased face. I will now stick on the 17 odd pieces of face to the timber (this is just for around the eyes) and cut then individually, therefore not losing size off the pieces with kerf.
The cuts will have to be done so the band saw blade just kisses the outside of the shapes so that when they are pushed back together the sum of the parts should equal the space I want to fill.....
