Bohler Udderholm www.buau.com.au
Are the only two specialty metals suppliers I know of. There is a place at Crestmead but can't see them being any bigger that BU.
What characteristic do you need 1018 for that 1020 wouldn't suffice. The properties seem relatively similar?Cheers

Thanks Craig. Some 8 years ago I bought some from Austral Wright when they were still at Coopers Plains but they don't stock this any longer. For the best possible magnetic inductance I need very low carbon and 1018 is about the maximum acceptable, 1012 is lower still and thus that little bit better.

The variety of alloys that make these characteristics is just fascinating really. The science of metals is just incredible really.
Sounds like you are going to have to get the old fingers walking in the phone book - still the two I mentioned may not list it on the web but still either stock it or source it on order. They are after all specialty steel suppliers.
I would be interested to see if they can supply it mainly cause it means their catalogue is not restrictive.Cheers

Thanks Craig. I will give them a ring next week and it will be interesting to see what is available. The guys I know are pretty good but all they are interested in is stainless steel and that is a different ball game alltogether.

I get my machining metals from Bohler-Uddeholm at Marryong NSW.
They had it in stock last time I was there, and it is listed on the metals poster they gave me for my workshop. How much do you want? Maybe they can post to you. Surely though, there is a stockist in Qld.
Good luck

Thanks Fossil. I think the standard length is 3.6m so it needs to be cut to fit in the car if I pick it up. I need 32 ml lenths. I will give them a phone call on Monday and hope they have it.

Checked today but the lowest grade I can get is 1020 and unfortunately not suitable. Had a look at 1214 has low carbon but the sulphur is far too high. I will keep on searching.

Tony from Bohler-Uddeholm rang me back today too. He must be freaking out wondering why two seperate people are chasing 1012 low carbon steel
1018 is also very suitable if you can get it. And if you can, tell me where please? Buying cores from the states is proving a costly affair.

I take it you make stuff for tattoo machines ? Phoned around more today but 1020 is the lowest grade around. It looks like I have to buy it from interstate.

Correct. And rest easy in the knowledge that the troubles you are having in finding material has also plagued myself and a couple other machine builders I know of in Australia. Sourcing bits and pieces from the USA is getting to be too expensive and you can't always guarentee that you will recieve what you paid for.
As I said, if you do manage to find some 8mm or 10mm 1012 low carbon steel or iron rod, please don't hesitate to let me know where you got it from.

That is interesting to know. At work they make beautiful railings etc for the boats but they talk stainless steel and nothing else. We shall continue the search. There may be something to be sourced from Townsville but you would think Brisbane is big enough......

Guys
You could give this mob a try
http://www.smallparts.com.au/cgi-bin...l?alpha=R=post
If you search under Bar you come up with a square low carbon steel - no round bar that I could see nor does it say specific grades, but they are at Mansfield.Cheers

Thanks Craig. That is certainly interesting. The specifics for low carbon steel are not mentioned but I can ask. The price for 5/16x3' (or 8mm x 91 cm) is not cheap around the $ 22.00 but would be cheaper than imported stuff.
