2nd Melbourne Scraping Class.

Gentlemen.

The time has come to announce the 2nd Melbourne Scraping Class. I’ve asked permission of Big Shed & Neil Ellis, to organise it from here. So with their good grace, here we go.

Around 21 of you have contacted me, about attending a second class. So we have plenty of interest. If all of you were seriously interested, we would have enough for two classes. In which case I’d do consecutive weekends, to get it out of the way.

What’s on offer at this stage is this.

7.30 am. Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th of April. 2012

Be aware that is the weekend after Easter. Any latter than that, and it gets cold and dark down here.

That’s 7 weeks away Gentlemen. More than enough time to get organised.

Bit of a refresher course here if you forgot what you missed last time.

With only a few exceptions, my plan is to use all that we learned from organising the last one, and apply it too this one. Very little will change, but a lot more prepared this time.

Unless you have a very compelling reason, the cast iron blocks I’m preparing, are mandatory. The blocks basically 50 x 100 x 150mm cast iron chunks, have all the features to learn the fundamentals on, yet are quick and easy to handle. We don’t only do flat, the second and third sides get into geometry, squareness and parallelism, etc.

With the limited time we have over a weekend (16 – 20 hours), it’s a perfect project. It also helps with work holding, fixturing and measurement, if everyone is working on the same thing.

At this stage, all you would need is enthusiasm. With 7 weeks, we have time to develop, acquire, beg, borrow or steal enough equipment, scrapers etc. So if you have little or no equipment, don’t panic. Previous experience is NOT a requirement also. A wise man once told me, “Scraping is just a labourer’s job, with a little thought, thrown in”.

On the other hand, if you have plenty of equipment or projects, bring them. We will find time to discuss them. And the usual buy, swap and sell is welcomed. There will be time for that at the end of each day.

Cost is same as the last class $300, plus the cast iron @ $70. So you’re looking @ $370 for two days instruction, two instructors, this includes food, water and soft drinks. You shouldn’t want for anything while you are here. There’s a better than fair chance the “Barista”, will be available.

If that's the case, I better start loading up the trailer now and plan on heading off early.

Phil, I'd like to be there. Can you put me down on the list please? I'll need to get some more details so I can book travel and arrange all those other annoying details, but in principle it's all good.

If that's the case, I better start loading up the trailer now and plan on heading off early.

Perhaps, load the Hercus Tool & Cutter slide, I might be able to give you a hand in bringing it in to shape

If possible I would like to be included in the scraping session.
I only have a carbon steel hand forged hardened & honed scraper made from a file.
It would be a good opportunity to come up to speed & meet others.

If you have room, I'll commit to this class, though I wasn't at first session.Really interested to learn how to keep angles accurate. I think this is fantastic opportunity!

hi rdmdtfrd (please do tell us your name soon),
this isn't an advanced class - this is a repeat of the beginners class or two.
Phil's idea is to get a good number of people confident enough and good enough to run some intermediate or advanced machine restoration classes to follow on. But without proper scraping, bluing and measuring skills that would be a waste of time.
So enjoy the beginner's class! At the first one even the experienced attendants learned a lot.
