Another option for an adjustable speed single phase motor is to use a "reeves drive" or constant velocity transmission, the same thing a bridgeport mill uses to vary its speed.

    Hi all,

I have a question for anyone with motor winding experience. Today I took possession of a 3 phase star motor I bought from ebay. The front plate shows the 6 wire terminals and how to configure for either star or delta. However, removal of the terminal cover shows only 3 wires and it looks like it has been hard wired as star and the other 3 connections (where three wire at the centre of the star) have not been brought out from inside the motor. I have removed the rotor to expose the windings and it reveals the star connection where 3 wires are joined. My question is, after breaking these connections, soldering new wires to them and breaking them out into the junction box, what should I use to the insulate the newly soldered wire? I'm thinking heat shrink is probably not the best for longevity given the potential operating temps. The original insulation seems to be a white braided material, can you buy small amounts of this stuff?

    Cheers,

    Simon

    Simon,
polyurethane inpregnated fibreglass braid insulation tube.
Don't know where to buy small quanity you require but you may be able to souce enough from a junked appliance such as a toaster or use a bit of teflon tubing which is clear and can also be sourced from junked appliences, it is used to insulate wires but test to make sure its hi temp stuff by appling a flame to the tube.
You may be able to get some from a sparky as it is used to insulate the wires on halogen lights, most sparky don't use it and toss it away.

Found Jaycar sells it VIDAFLEX fibreglass Sleeving - Jaycar Electronics
