Default 5C Collet Square Stock Tolerance

I need to make four small components that will involve milling some Dia 8 brass stock down to 6 square (with rounded corners), each part about 10 long, and then chucking in the lathe to make a Dia 3 spigot about 3 long on each part.
Mill operations will add a cross hole Dia 2.5 and the last step will be filing the square end using buttons.
I am planning to use a 5C square collet for the lathe, about 7 length in the collet for the last part from the stick of four.

How accurate must the 6 x 6 square dimension be to correctly fit the collet ?
My investigations leads me to think +/- 0.1 mm might be OK.
I have never used square collets, is this a reasonable tolerance for the square work ?

The collet has not been purchased yet, but will probably be part of a set from ArcEurotrade in the UK.

Best wishes to all for 2014,
    John

I would say +0.0 to -0.1 would be Best. You might get away with up to +0.05.

    Thanks for the response, Techo1.

Further investigations today would indicate that any '+' tolerance is not tolerated by many top-end 5C collet brands, and the '-' tolerance should be limited to about -0.05.
I will just have to make sure my milling to size comes within these requirements.

I get the impression that economy brands could be a considerable error away from nominal and that the user just needs to be aware and to compensate accordingly.
My only interest in 5C collets is to get the square fitting, I have other chucks and collets for round stock.
I will get the 5C square collets, then experiment as to what size fits.

One very surprising revelation is that forcing the collet to open a small amount by forcing with tapers and/or screwdrivers in the slots is reported in industrial practice, although it may be frowned upon by management.

    Hi John,

For quality reasons I'm sticking with Hardinge and one of the best deals I've found is through Amazon, at least for round collets. The squares and hex are a bit more I think. The shipping can make the difference.

All the best to you as well.

    Cheers
