    Default 9" grinder which one?

Just need some advice on which 9" grinder to buy as my faithful 20 year old Ryobi has gone to god, any ideas?

If there was any fire and smoke involved I figure it went the other way

Metabo, AEG, Makita, Hitachi. Bosch blue. I don't think you can go wrong with those brands.

Metabo are usually pricey. My current Makita is not the quality of the one it replaced. I think that AEG is now owned by Ryobi; so the build quality may have gone down.

I have no input on new ones as my 3 are older models, but look at the weight of them as some are really heavy, or they used to be.

They seem to be getting less common in the shops as more workshops ban there use do to health and safety issues.
Having said that I just brought one from Masters for $40 on clearance. Can't really go wrong at that price.

I've had a good run out of 9" Hitachi, AEG used to be good, but I think they have slipped these days, I've got Makita 5" and 4" and they seem pretty good, so their 9" is probably ok. But I think Metabo overall is better quality.

If I was looking for a new one I'd be looking at the Metabo Product catalogue handheld powertools - Products - Metabo Australia - Power tools built by professionals for professionals

Thanks for all that info, I will look also at the pro tool, at $399. Seems good for a German made gear and 3 year warranty.

I'd go the Metabo. I used to swear by Makita but they have slipped IMHO. AEG is now made in China. I had a Japanese made Hitachi chop saw and it was sold to me as the best on the market at the time (well maybe it was sold to me as we need to move these.....) and it really didn't do much work before packing it in. Maybe 6 or 8 wheels?
I would go Metabo, or buy cheap and treat it like a consumable.

Someone might correct me, but isn't Pro Tool another brand name for Metabo?

Correction... I was thinking of Festool, they are owned by the same company that make Protool

    HI,

Just reading the thread re 9" grinders and someone said they becoming rarer etc. I'm pretty sure they are being phased out due to OHS laws. My employer (big government dept) won't replace the ones we break due to the new laws/guidelines.
So if you want one, I'd get it sooner rather than later.

    Ben.

I hate 9" grinders having spent far too many hours running one.

However a Metabo with soft start would be my first choice. Makita is fine if you're not going to be using it for hours every day. That's what I have.

The 9" is my last choice of grinders though, and I speak as a person who owns and uses 5 of the 5" grinders. My choice there is Metabo, too, that's my favourite, though I also have 2 of the Mactec ones, a Makita and a Chinese no name.

I have 5 grinders because I hate changing over discs. This way I have each one set up for grinding, cutting, flap wheel, wire cup etc. Pick up the right one and go for it. The 9" lives in the cupboard unless I need the extra depth of reach or I've got some really heavy grinding to do that's NOT over my head.

I have had a great run with Bosch Industrial gear of late.

My 9 inch grinder is a Bosch Industrial.

I'm a country of origin snob when I buy tools.

    Cheers

Metabo. Mine has a safety clutch and a rotating handle. Both have proved invaluable.

Call me one eyed, But I would go with Dewalt.
I have two 9", Two 5" and two 4" Dewalts and they have never missed a beat.
I am not a fan of Makita anymore, Even just the feel of them seems cheap, They are made in China now, Go figure.........
I do have a mix of other brands including Hitachi,Bosh and AEG. These have been good machines also (and still are) But I feel the Dewalt is just the best of the best.
Remember this is my opinion and I have nothing to do with Dewalt other than being an extremely happy customer.

What is the OHS issue with them?

They are powerful, but never had a wheel come apart on them...

I have a metabo.... The motor died in it once for no reason, not had a lot of use either... But when you need to remove metal, it is the go to grinder...
