9kg Gas Bottle Barby/Camp Fire
I am looking for a plan, photo, description, to make a camping barby etc using an out of date 9kg gas bottle. I have seen one on my travels and although there is a bit of info on the net eg Oz Pig they are not the same as the original one that I saw on my trip. If any forum member has any info or link that I can follow I would appreciate it.
Regards
david

Expired 9kg gas bottle?
Love the CHOOFER, where does one buy an expired 9kg gas bottle?
Wanna make one.

"the gas bottle checking depot " same place I got mine. Had to fix a gas bottle holder that had an altercation in an undercover car park, never mind the low clearance.
What better to shape a gas ring holder from than an old gas bottle.
Anyway if the barby thing doesnt work out there's always the option of making one into a heater for the shed. Wont last as long as a cast iron unit, but cool to make just the same.

How do you go about cutting these cylinders? Are they inflammable/explosive like a petrol tank?

With mine I removed the valve from the top , filled with water , kept topping it up and shaking bottle , left overnight , drained , held in vice by the handle on the top and cut the botton off about 3" from the bottom with a hacksaw , rotating bottle in vice as I go .
That was overkill but better safe than sorry , mate cut his with a cutting disk in an angle grinder after flushing with water but I felt safer using a hacksaw .
Are they dangerous ...YESAshore

The bottle will need to be purged before cutting or welding anywhere on it.
I have welded fuel tanks in the past and purged them first by holding the open neck of the tank over the tail pipe of a running car engine for a few minutes. After that you can cut and weld all you like..
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

I wouldn't mind knocking one of these together too. I saw the pig version at an outdoor and camping show recently, pretty trick but I think I'll keep mine vertical.
There has been a discussion about the safety of cutting gas bottles on a blacksmithing forum here

Cool idea, but I can't see the pics on the other forum, I even registered and still no good. Can someone post the pics?
Cheers, Richard

Choofer pictures
Attached are some pictures of the Choofer, as depicted in the Caravan & motor home forum.
Hope I don't get into strife for this, however, I reckon Frank & Brenda that made this, need a pat on the back.
I had to register to view them, and received acceptance after 24 hours.
Looks like a great forum if you are the outdoors type.
