I'm 30 and I've been using the internet since my early teens. I refuse to use facebook for basically all of the reasons stated above. I did set up a "fake" account under my cats name so I know what I'm missing out on. The only part that bothers me is that I get left out of things because I have friends that refuse to pick up the phone to invite people to things etc. because they can just invite all their friends on facebook. I guess that is partly my fault though for not attending a lot of stuff I've been invited to in the past few years either so they can't really be bothered with me anymore but maybe I have more interesting things to do with my spare time than sit around on someone's back patio every weekend and get drunk or attend birthday parties for two year olds.
Í also don't watch very much TV at all and when I do it is usually only because my wife is sitting in front of the TV. I only listen to the radio in the car and change stations an average of once every three minutes to avoid the adds and all the blah blah blah from the announcers who think the whole world wants to hear about their weekend or whatever.
I don't answer my home phone anymore because whenever it rings it's a telemarketer or charity organisation. Anyone that I would want to talk to has my mobile number anyway.
But who knows, maybe I'm the weird one and the rest of the world is normal.

If that is what they call normal they can keep it and i'll stay strange
I never did get the point of facebook, when i was a teen my Sister used to come home from school and then get on the phone and talk with her friends, the once she had just seen at school. All i see is facebook is just one step further....
Then we did home schooling, gosh imagine the shock to her social life.....i loved it! But then i did never see the point in socializing....

The Weird Ones
Struth Nhil, you just described me down to a T. Me either, I can count all of my friends on one hand. Dont do the Twit, the Face, phone is on a answering machine, watch ABC news and that is it, do not follow any kind of sport. Oxygen is still free until some pollie puts a tax on it. I get my relaxation out of my man cave, riding my m/cycles and reading.

In terms of the social media (SM), which are essentially tools that enable the sharing of thoughts and interests on-line, there's actually not that much difference between these forums and FB so by merely writing the above post you are SM-ing.
Most humans love to gossip, SM just enabled folks to do it on a grander and more embarrassing scale. Just as we all have preferences for most things, different forms of SM suit different people. I have tried blogging, FB, Linkedin, etc (I drew the line at twitter) but found they didn't suit me - ie my skin started crawling every time I used them. The other thing they did was enabled a number of people I'd rather forget (like students I had terminated from courses and staff I had not renewed contracts) to contact me that wanted to be my friend?
One significant difference between the various forms of SM is the degree of relentless privacy invasions (ie emails about have you heard about this or that friend, or they way it tries to get at your contact,s and the way it is almost impossible to drop out of some of them). It does irritates me when SM becomes the ONLY way some people want to keep in touch but I figure if I miss out on a social occasion because I was not on FB then it was probably not worth going to.
I like these forums because they has a low "push factor" and match many of my interests but they are not perfect. They would be even better if I could switch off all references to "Pen Turning".

Agree.
I like this forum because it has a very low agression factor, and most members are patient and respectful of other peoples comments.
Even if they may not always tie in with their own opinions.

Nhil, try switching the radio over to JJJ. The lack of ads* is EXTREMELY refreshing. Between no tv and only listening to JJJ my advertising exposure is limited basically to billboards etc when i go out, or the junk mail which i promptly recycle.
The non-commercial music is actually quite good to, once you get used to it.
Regarding forums vs facebook etc, I have always considered the car forums i am a member of to be more like a "car club" where we can catch up over vast distances to share ideas and talk about our hobbies rather than a social media platform.
*lack of ads should hopefully resume after our National Farce is completed on Saturday. They have been pushing the election quite hard recently, and had a very clearly AEC driven campaign getting far too much airtime until enrolments closed. Pretty sick of hearing about it TBH.

I knew it was a car related name, I just couldn't put my finger on it. +1 for jjj, no adds is the reason I listen, plus the lack of repetition. Although I don't get good reception here in the shed, instead I play off my phone, got over 1000 songs so there is no repetition in here either, no ads either......
As of last night there is a blanket ban on political advertising, just have to get past the clowns on Saturday now....

You *could* say that....
Old photo -the closer red one is now a trailer, the white one went to the great wrecking yard in the sky, and there is a couple of new faces too
andrew_mx83 is now just my default internet/forum nickname, it seems fitting as everybody knows me as "The Cressida Man"
Most of the tools in my shed are based around making aftermarket parts for the mx83 and also building engines, in particular the mighty 7m-ge (3lt straight 6). Current build is chasing 9000rpm...
You can see some of the go-fast bits i make for these and other cars at technicoracing.com

HI,
I like this forum a lot as it has plenty of people who are much like me and plenty who probably aren't. We all do like metalwork though and it's not as argy bargy as some of the international forums. I'm always picking up good ideas of what I want to make or buy in the future. Most of the members seem pretty ok too (received lots of help and ideas from various members).
Since we're talking cars I've got a 1983 Toyota Blizzard for my daily drive. When I get my camera going I'll post a photo.
Cheers Ben.

I had a Daihatsu F25 (Scat) traytop 4x4 for quite a few years - the blood brother of your Blizzard but rougher riding - if that's possible. Would go anywhere.
Had the standard 1600 cc ex Corona petrol engine that did 20 MPG around town and not much more on the freeway.
Scariest vehicle I ever drove in the wet on sealed roads as it had military style bar grips on all wheels. Slip slidin away. Put on the AT retreads seen below and it went better
Great fun to drive at moderate speeds though.
Had a massive (truck) gearbox for the poxy little motor. Most Scats (including mine) turned into rust buckets.
Here's some photo's.

That's what I like about these forums, other than work shop jobs we also discover we all have a 4 wheel fetish.
So here is my user name sake (GTVi).

The problem with JJJ is that they don't play any music . I don't know what is worse, the ads or modern "music". I also find JJJ to be a bit too immature for my liking. The only thing I like about it is Dr Carl and it must be over a year since I heard him. JJJ gets played a bit at work. I prefer to play my own selections.

I used to listen to JJJ all the time and do find my way back to it at times but I also find some of the music and talk annoying these days.
BobL, I totally agree with your points on social media but just couldn't find the words to describe it that well. I like to pick and choose who I share aspects of my life with and don't think every one I've ever met needs to know certain things. I also like to be able to disassociate with certain people have met in the past and the last thing I need is them sending me "friend requests".
I too have been a member of various car forums and other various forums. I only got back on this one recently as I'm trying to get back into woodwork a bit more again, for the last two years I've been a bit obsessed with aquaponics and fish in general and that has been dominating most of my free time, so I've been a more frequent member on the Aquaponics forum instead.
In a way I think I have too many interests and hobbies which is probably why I'm so anti-social in a way. I'd rather be spending time in the shed building something than out catching up with people, and I think I've actually read a post from BobL that he felt the same way a couple of years ago, (yes, I have a good memory) and there is probably a lot of others on forums like this that feel the same way.

I'd rather have too many interests than too few. Over the last year or so I have met a number of soon to be, or recently retired people and some are quite bored. Some so much they have gone back to work. I find myself drifting more and more to metal work and more recently to machinery so things seem to fall off the back of the mental roller.
