AL340 lathe power-on light
The power-on light has stopped working on my AL340, I'm trying to open it to replace the bulb without success so far.
I don't know whether the light cover snaps on or screws on, the whole fitting is loose in the panel and rotates when I try the unscrew method. I'm wary of trying too hard to unsnap the cover in case it is a screw on.
Any thoughts?

Hi Bob
I just went and had a look at mine and tried to unscrew it and the whole thing started to come loose so I applied some outward force on it and screwed it up tight again.
This might indicate a backing nut on the back inside the facia panel which looks like a pain to get off.
I tried to take the lens off too and I see what you mean. I reckon it is part of the shroud and not snapped in.
Sorry I couldn't help much.
Phil

It could be a sealed neon indicator lamp. They usually just get dimmer and dimmer until you cant see anything at all, though the series resistor can fail open circuit and then there is no light at all.
Just be a little careful trying to unscrew it without being able to see at the back. I seem to recall that someone had a problem where the wire twisted and shorted to the case. He also discovered that his machine wasn't properly grounded/earthed.Best Regards:

It turns out that the power-on light, coolant switch, jog switch and emergency switch are mounted through the printed aluminium sheet and are held in place with back nuts. After those items are mounted and wired the aluminium sheet is screwed to the headstock, then the speed change and feed screw handles are fixed to their shafts.
I'm trying to remove the handles, I'm starting to think that they were loctited on at the factory. Grrrr!

Hi Bob,
Difficult to see from the picture, could do with a close up, but it looks like an incandescent bulb holder of the type that has a nut screwed on at the back to secure the housing and a screw off lens. If it is you remove just the lens without rotating the black ring which is the housing. There is / was a rubber tool, a bit like a sucker, that was used to remove just the lens and a second tool that was basically a bit of rubber tube, used to remove the bulb.
Hope this helpsBest Regards:

They also now make LED replacement bayonet globes that can go in place of the incandesce ones.
