Someone on here has 2 craftsman lathes he was restoring not sure how he ended up
My only complaint is they went to the trouble of making the stand into a bomb shelter and putting the drive motor under the bed but you still needed to change pullies. Other makers would put a high low gearbox directly to the motor and use expanding contracting pullies to vary the speed with a handle. Now that would have been the best small lathe made in Australiahappy turning

Hercus called it a clutch shifter lever. The bull gear was fitted with a clutch rather than the spring loaded bull gear lock that you had to disengage with your fingers on the 9" lathe. My brother in law has a Craftsman. It has a total of 12 teeth missing from the bull gear, back gear and spindle. Obviously someone learned the hard way that the spindle needs to be stationary to change from high to low.

Patrick,
My mill has a stepless variable speed pulley arrangement and whilst I have been spoiled by that wonderful convenience, I'd happily put up with the inconvenience of changing pulleys on the little Craftsman. I will always remember you deliberating over that beautiful Craftsman at Hare and Forbes.
