Default Beer on tap at Friedrich Deckel??

Joe might be able to comment on the likelihood of this being a true story.

I was at a mate's 50th birthday show last night and got into a conversation with a bloke from Liverpool UK, about my age, on the topic of "what do you do....". Somehow shapers came up. Not something I'd talk about with too many people outside of this forum. Turns out he operated a large Elliott back in the 70's. He knew about the cutter leaving a mark on the workpiece at the commencement of the return stroke when the cutter bounces off and back onto the work.

.... Anyway , we get onto my trip, Munich and the Deutsches Museum. He said he worked in Germany for a while, then he asked if I had heard of Deckel. I said sure. He said he worked a CNC machine at Deckel's factory at Holzkirchen, about 1/2 an hour's drive from Munich. I had a look this morning for info on Holzkirchen wooden churches and found that F. Deckel had factories there from 1958 to 1988.

Here's the funny and hard to believe bit. He reckoned there were beer vending machines in the canteens alongside the coffee machine . A drink on the go or when you go? Maybe Germans drink responsibly.

While it seems a bit far fetched he hadn't been bull sheeting me up to that point.

About 25 years ago I was working in a workshop in the mine up in Weipa, we had an O&K G350 Grader, it was always having trouble with the transmission, cooling system and the steering, enough complaining and they sent out the engineer that designed the machine from Germany.

I worked with him on the Grader for about a week. He told me they had beer on tap in their workshop in Germany.
I said to him that we wouldnt be able to do that in Australia, because people would be drunk and get hurt. His reply in heavily accented english was " in Germany we respect beer "

A different attitude to it I guess.
But I do remember when I backpacked around Europe, there were plenty of Germans that overindulged, just like the rest of us.

There was some discussion about this on another Machinist forum where they mention that it was true that beer was available and went on to mention it was a fairly low octane beer compared with say Aussie beers. Apparently beer is classed as a "Food" in Germany due to it's nutritional content.

Come up with a mechanism that lifts the cutter up and out of the way on the return stroke, such as....

Well, I can confirm that until at least the early 80s, alcohol at work was common place. Alcohol can still be bought just about anywhere in Germany - vending machines, bus and tram stops, supermarkets and corner stores.
In the early 80s, Audi hired a new hot-shot CEO who banned drinking at work and ordered all the stubby holders cut off the forklifts (a common site back then). The entire operation was shut down by the workers going on strike! He relented after a week and had the stubby holders welded back on
But from then on OH&S rules all over Germany were slowly revised and within a year or two, alcohol at work everywhere became a sackable offence.

I last worked in Germany briefly in 1974 - driving a truck for an industrial metal recycler. Everybody there drank at work - and everyone was #### scared of the big elecromagnetic crane after lunch, because the crane driver was from then on...

    Hi John,
You could try adjusting the distance the tool travels past the end of the work or as Bob says you could make a tool lifter

    Hi BT,

I worked in a factory in Spain where they had beer in the canteen fridge, nobody thought anything of it... that would have been early 2000's

Another spin, on the same theme, the workers at the CUB Abbotsford plant actually went on strike because the company replaced the heavy beer in the canteen fridge with light beer... that would have been mid 70's I guess. Most of the people working in the brewery in those days were half cut..

So, yes I would think Deckel would very likely have had beer in the fridge, the question is what brand.. ..Weitzen Bier bitte Ottokringer.. Schoffer Hoffer perhaps..

    Regards
    Ray

I've never had a problem with it. Meaning I don't get the marks.
Maybe my cuts are too light?

Maybe it's a Douglas / cast iron thing Bryan. I've only used my shaper on cast iron.

Stuart's right. The ram travels faster on the return stroke so the further it travels past the end of the cut the more speed it picks up on the return stroke and bounces when it rides up on the job.

Here in America, beer for lunch was common in breweries also. Stopped a few years ago.

Porsche had beer taps on their assembly lines up until the mid 90's.

Not sure if they still exist but it's a Swabian (Stuttgart being loated in Swabia Germany) tradition to have been when you want.

They did tell me that nayone who got drunk/affected lost their jobs.
