Beginners tooling kit
Gday,
Does anyone know of a reasonably priced tooling kit available for someone starting out? I realise there are a lot of variables but just looking for suggestions.
The lathe I bought is second hand and cant find a brand on it, just a serial No. and Type CQ6230 stamped on it. The Manual I found that seems to be the same is a "Grizzly" if that's any help. I bought it off a bloke who is an Electrical Technician , has owned it from new and is very particular with his tools so I believe its in very good condition. He's added a digital readout, RPM read out and a variable speed switch and converted it from 3 phase to 2.
It has come with 3 and 4 jaw chucks, face plates, live centres. steady rests and tool holders etc but only one carbide cutting tool. (picture below)
I guess I need a parting tool, centre drill, thread cutting bit and possibly boring bar to get started but have got completely confused after reading up on all the carbide tips......I was thinking a WNMG with negative rake would be a good all rounder and economical , but are now thinking my lathe may be too small for a negative rake, and would I need a 12mm shank like the one I was given or should I get 14mm for a little extra strength???
So..... with my very limited knowledge and tight budget, I wondering if there is some sort of starters kit available that has a few basics that will get me started. I don't want to buy absolute crap but don't mind something a little average to start with that I can replace with better gear suited to specific jobs as I get more familiar with my new toy.
Im sure you will need more info , but don't want to rattle on too long, so hope that gives you some idea where im at...Cheers in advance....Hairy
