Hi Big Shed,
Thanks for posting the pictures, I was there this afternoon, and was just amazed by the level of ingenuity and skill on display. The meccano plaiting machine was a work of art. Multiple reels of thread weaving in and out and producing a plaited rope out the end.
The meccano babbage engine, I didn't see it working, but was still very impressive.
Too many things to see, and admire. Came away with a digital dial gauge and digital vernier calipers, probably the same seller as you got I suspect. And a few nice blocks of Alumimium, that will go into the crucible when the furnace is finished.
Can't say that I have ever machined spring steel, but if it's like 01 Tool steel, then it's pretty straight forward to work with provided it's annealed.
Regards
Ray

Yes Ray, SWMBO (who reluctantly came along) was absolutely intrigued with that braiding machine and said she thought that alone was worth the price of admission.
The guy with the measuring equipment, Insize, had some good gear there and even though it was made in China it seems very well made and certainly was well packaged an presented.
I bought a 0-1" (0-25mm) digital indicator for $50, cheapest I have seen these here in Oz was well over $200, even in the US the cheapest from CDCO is $US48 ($A65) plus postage.
Shame this exhibition is only on every 2 years (the alternating years it is done by the Melbourne Model Engineers).

Is there something similar to the Working with wood show that's held in Sydney each year, except covering metal?
