Yes it has been debated before and different points of view expressed. I'm just reporting what the latest MSDSs say. Where I used to work we had a safety notice issued saying mineral turps should not be used unless proper ventilation was utilised which meant in a fume hood. Given the occasional exposure under DIY conditions this probably means do not leave open containers of Turps laying around the shed. Apart from the fumes there is a fire hazard to consider. The recommended method of disposal is to leave the turps exposed to the atmosphere 9but not in a shed) where is decomposes relatively quickly .
