Default These bricks ok for a little forge?

I picked up a bunch of these bricks from a couple of old electric wall heaters and thought they might be useful for making a little fire driven forge. The two black lines are channels where the heater coils used to run and they're flat on the back.

    Whaddaya reckon?

If they're good to use, I was thinking that I could just leave them as singles and stack them into shape as required. But if I was to build a more permanent solution is there any particular thing I should use to stick 'em together or would a normal concrete/mortar be ok?

    Ta.

    Hi Redshirt,

Should be ok, just make sure they aren't asbestos..

Just stack them up as you want, don't use mortar or concrete.. If you really want a more permanent arrangement, there are ceramic furnace lining and repair products that will do the job, but they tend to be expensive. ITC-100 IR reflective coating or something similar.

    Regards

    Thanks Ray.

Is there a way to tell if they're asbestos?

Good question. I would like to know as I plan to crush some.

Redshirt, I saw one where the guy built a box frame to house the fire bricks and wrapped the sides in sheet metal. Ended up being a nice sturdy unit. No mortar was used as per Ray's suggestion.

I'm still working on a mower deck as a mobile base for the one I plan to build but must admit progress is very slow.

    Hi RedShirtGuy,

Sorry, I don't know, I don't think you can easily tell by looking, if it is from a heater installed pre-1980, my guess is it probably does contain asbestos.

Breaking bits off can be dangerous if there is a chance you can breathe the airborne particles.

Have a look here for some licensed asbestos testers.

    Nasty stuff, asbestos.

It is, although the danger has been blown out of all proportion..

If it was really that bad, anyone alive before 1990 would be dead by now as every brake pad used to use it...

Just treat the stuff with respect and take precautions...

Most of the other additives in refractory bricks are not too healthy if you inhale then, they just call it 'silicosis' instead. Still wrecks your lungs & eventually kills you, its just not a 'cancer'.

So 1) don't crush them up. and 2) treat all refractory bricks as if they had asbestos - disposable overalls, dustmasks etc..

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what I can wrangle for some testing the next time I'm in the area of one of those testy places.
