Chinese copies
Looks like Mitutoyo and Starrett aren't the only fakes to watch out for.
This has just been posted on Gumtree.

"Then we have the CORRUPT Stihl dealers in the USA that export to Australia. DO NOT BE FOOLED by these clowns. You will NOT and I will repeat myself will NOT get warranty on these products either. These products are NOT sold by the Stihl dealer network."
Is he saying the "CORRUPT Stihl dealers in the USA" sell copies or that if you buy a Stihl saw from a Stihl dealer in the USA you wont be covered by the manufactures warranty?
If the later I thought the goverment had put a stop to manufactures doing this?

I think what he's saying is that dealers aren't supposed to sell outside their own boundaries. I can see both sides of the story, on the one hand the local dealer makes nothing from a sale, yet is still expected to maintain spare parts and service. On the other hand it often results in wholesalers stitching up an exclusive distributer deal for an area then using it as a vehicle to put extraordinary markups on their products that the retailer then gets blamed with.
Incidentally I saw a local retailer making similar claims about Makita products (genuine not copy) being purchased through eBay from the US, where complete BS was being spruiked in the hope of putting the fear of God into purchasers in the hope to protect their own absurdly marked up products.

I thought afterwards maybe I should have posted this in the ebay auctions section, but saw it as a discussion point on where all this fake production may be heading.
If there's no control over what's being copied, who knows where this may end.
Could be easy to get caught out and buy junk.

G'Day Fellas,
Another brand to add to the list, I recently saw fake Mahr calipers on a (surprise) Chinese website.

Yes, I did also see Husqvarna chainsaws and parts from China, at imposssibly-to-be-genuine low prices.
!! THAT SAID!!
I bought about a year ago, when the Aussie $ was high, a Husqvarna 346XP chainsaw via eBay direct from the USA for under AU$600 including postage to AU. The exactly same saw is sold by Australian dealers for AU$1,299 list price, and they will not give in more than 10 or 15% on this list price. For less than half list price for a brand new saw I do not care about a local warranty. I can fix a chainsaw myself.
The only problem is size. Chainsaws come in a very small box, making postage from the USA less than $100. But you cannot import a brush cutter or a pole saw from The US, because the box size makes postage ridiculously expensive.
Stihl products are a LOT cheaper in the USA, because they are made there and it is a much more competitive market over there. It is HALF THE PRICE of what we are asked to pay. But Stihl US dealers are not allowed to direct export. Me personally, I find it a disgusting company policy. They charge us in Australia double, because they can, because they think we are all rich miners, or poor suckers that deserve to be ripped off. You know, I would not mind paying 10% more because of our GST, and I would not mind paying another 10% more to get my local dealer a fair go, and would even pay another 10% extra because we are so far away and posage is sooo expensive..... but I will not be ripped off for more than double the US price without a fight, without leaving any stone unturned to buy direct. And you know what, I do NOT feel ashamed for doing this. I am proud to do it and to recommend it.
PS: the Husqvarna 346 I bought from USA is 100% genuine. I can tell, because I had a Husqvarna 345 for the last 10 years and did all maintenace myself. And I had no problems whatsoever in the warranty year, not with the new 346 nor with the old 345. The first problems appear about 5+ years after the warranty ends, regardless if it was a grey import or from the local dealer.

Nothing to do with China, but we are being ripped off with a lot of things.
My wife has a little second hand 6 year old BMW 120i with only one key fob (other one lost by original owner years ago). BMW Australia wants $960 for a replacement
When we were in Germany, we went to the local BMW dealer and ordered one there. He put in the order with Vin number, said that was a right hand drive car for Australian delivery, made in March 2007, was that so? Yes, we said, how much? $206 (converted from Euros)... How's that???
Cheers,
JoeCheers,
Joe

BTW most countries in the world have a GST/VAT/Sales Tax, it's not unique to Australia. In the US it just happens to be applied at state rather than federal level, so the amount varies from state to state. In California for example it's 7.5 base rate, but in typical US style, "wait there's more" sometimes there's another couple of percent added to that for reasons I never could fathom. I don't believe it should be added for export, but in reality it often is.

Whilst we are on the subject. Those of us that look for Mitutoyo on Ebay would be well aware of the Heat Movie 1949 seller from QLD. He's had an endless supply of Mitutoyo gear for several years.
NEW Mitutoyo 505 681 Dial Caliper Vernier Caliper Range 0 150mm 0 01mm SDH056 | eBay
It had me buggered how he had so much Mitutoyo stiff in this country. It was only from a thread from here, I checked his feed back. The negatives he gets are because, his lists the items location as Brisbane, but the items are all posted from China.
He also does Fluke instruments.
Brand NEW Fluke 62 Mini Handheld Laser Infrared Thermometer GUN EMH006 | eBay
How can that be a business plan? What's the chances they are good fakes? His prices are close to retail. He had you run of the mill 0.01mm test indicator for $149, I could do better @ $129 from my local Thomastown Industrial supplier. And I'm pretty sure they just send the delivery driver over to MTI Qualous.
Regards Phil.

His Mitutoyo look like the real deal - provided they match the Ebay photo.
Here's the comparison document put out by Mitutoyo.

Brand NEW Mitutoyo 513 404E Dial Test Indicators 0 40mm 0 01mm SDH093 | eBay
First thing I look for is the length and angle of dovetail on the "front"
I've reported it, I'm sure Ebay will get right on it.

I just looked at the dial caliper. Well spotted Stuart.
The TI he's selling as a Mitutoyo looks the same as the cheapest CTC tools one (which I've got).
