Default Clarkson threaded tooling into ER Collets?

Just wondering if there are any issues using clarkson style threaded tooling in ER collets.

Reason I am asking is because I have a few threaded end mills and I only have an ER32 collet chuck.

    Thanks

Hi. I haven't done much milling yet (still setting things up) but i use an er32 collet and all my endmills are of the clarkson threaded type they seem to be ok. I did lots of reading before i lashed out and bough the collet set and it seems there are many people using the same. Combination

    Cheers.

    HI,
You shouldn't have any Issues. ER Collets can take both Threaded Shank and Plain Shank End Mills/Slot Drills. Just make sure when using ER Collets to hold the Threaded Shank type Cutters that the Collet has plenty of Plain Shank to Grip onto.

All my cutters have threaded shanks. I use them in both ER and Clarkson collet chucks. In normal use ER collets do not grip the threaded section.

Schaublin came up with an unusual solution when they made EFTX collets available.

A few photos from an old thread.

They are Schaublin EFTX-32 collets that look pretty much like they incorporate a back or depth stop. If that's what that projection is, then they would be real handy when it came to reinstalling cutters in the chuck. It dawned on me that there would have to be a large counterbore behind the taper in the chuck to accommodate the projection.

The seller said that they were intended to fit the ISO30 chuck fitted to Schaublin's 12 and 13 mills BUT I've been tricked before.

I went up to the shed last night and looked at my chucks. The ER 25 and 40 CTC's have a shallow counterbore. Then when I removed the collet from my Schaublin E32 chuck, there it was. The necessarily deep counterbore. It's nice to come out in front.

    Hi,
Just like bob all my cutters have threaded shanks and i have only used either er 40 or 32 without ever having a problem. The only problem i have ever had is using a short small cutter in the er40 and not being able to see whats going on because of the size of the chuck.

That's why I've never bothered to obtain additional collets for my ER40 chuck, the 1" and 25mm collets hold the largest shank cutters I have. I am tempted to buy a ER20 chuck to provide a bit more accessibility aka nut clearance.
