    Default Conic section

I made one of these the yesterday for a last minute xmas present. But it took me a little to figure out a way to make the conic section and I was wondering what ways people know of to make them.
This is how I did it, and I feel like I wasted a lot of material in doing it this way.

I turned a cylinder on the lathe, mounted it in the mill with a V block mounted at 15 degrees and cut the top angled flat and did the same for the wood. I then drilled a hole for a screw, then screwed and epoxy together, put the assembly back in the lathe, turned the 15 degree cone. I left some an extra 25mm or so past the end of the cone so I could mount it back on the mill in a rotary table mounted at 15 degrees off the x axis and use the y axis with an end mill to part of at the right angle and orientation. It worked ok and I'm sorry I can't show you a picture of the finished piece as it is now wrapped up under the tree..

    Hi Josh,
You could finish the bottom first then bolt it to a MS madrel.

    Default wood

What type of wood is that ? Did you polish it because it looks so smooth ?

The one in the rendering is rosewood, but I did not have any that I could use, so I used sheoak and yes it is polished but I think I should have used a darker timber as some of the brass has discoloured sheoak near the join.

That looks great and I am sure who ever gets it will be happy.

I like the idea of a mandrel, it would save a lot of material.
