convince me
ok just went to H&F's web site and they have the AL-50G on special for $200 cheaper than normal. i have been looking to get this lathe for some time but have waited to look at all that's available so but now it seems like a good price and hey $200 extra for tooling is just great
i was also looking at the smaller 7x12" lathes available as i know they are very popular, cheaper and smaller but still a useful size.............. the prices are sort of similar now so forgetting price if anyone has on of these lathes can you give me an opinion on it?
i really want to get a lathe and i think i can justify the price now so can anyone convince me?happy turning

I know I am biased, but I think you would be better off with the Steelmaster 9x20 variable speed model.
Lots of goodies that the H&F doesn't have.
Just my 2c

the Vari speed and digital readout are very tempting so that's one for the 7x12" lol

There is a wonderful option on the menu bar above that enables you to search for these things

yeah i read that thread before and i saw your bullet pens they look great. i know a place that sells the steel master up here in Bris and ill call about prices on Tuesday but apart from the EVS there isn't much difference and doesn't really bother me at this time if i do get the AL-50G a treadmill motor can fix it .
just a question on all the 9x20" lathes are they under powerd or is it mostly ok?
Edit: just looked on the net and you guys in Melbourne have that steel master on sale to! here is a link. up here in Bris Shaw Machinery have it but they dont have the prices on there website so i hope its on sale. they also have a large range of the hobby size machines so im itching to give them a call oh bugger it ill email them
oh and something i didn't realize is the EVS is not an infinite variable speed but a selection of 6. are the little 7x12" lathes the same?happy turning

Back gear gives much more torque at low speed. If you want to take the same cut on a diameter that is twice as large you will need twice as much torque. Not having back gear will limit the lathes capability to rip into large diameters, use form tools, that sort of thing. Even modern industrial CNC's often have what amounts to a back gear.
Basically if you want to work on stuff that is very much on the large side of what the machine can accommodate back gear becomes important.

Apart from any thing you have read or seen in regards to pros and cons, just looking at the specs the lathe in question doesnt seem to have a great rnge in the feed selection area,0.1 to 0.2 could be a little course for what you intend to machine.
