Default This might make some cry- scrap bin pics

This might make some cry. I was going past the scrap bin outside Fitting and Machining at work this arvo and as old habits die hard I had a quick look inside.
Look's like they have been having a clean up/out.

    scrap 001.jpg scrap 02.jpg
Most of this is extruded Cast Iron about 75 -80 dia X about 80 -100 long. The orange thing is an old refrig compressor I think- probably for ammonia.

    scrap 03.jpg
Black Mild steel about 50 dia X 50 long

    scrap 04.jpg

More 50 X 50 buried in there plus a few clamps.
What you can't see in the pics is the small steel bench with half an old alignment exercise. Approx 50 dia shaft, about 500 long running in two good plummer block bearings bolted to a lump of 100 X 50 channel. Quantity of lawn mower bases with wheels and half disassembled motors (bought new for exercises, never cut grass) All damaged in one way or another but still lots of salvagable parts on them. I counted at least 3 cast iron flat belt pulleys. These were an old student turning exercise way back - probably up until the 1960's. About 250 dia X 60 wide. They kept a lot after the exercise was discontinued years ago to use as a balancing exercise. Plus lots of other scrap.
Now, to answer the question everyone is thinking- Did I salvage any of it? No I didn't. I dont have room for it plus the bin is about 1600 high ( I can just see into it standing on my toes) and nothing nearby that I could use to climb into it.

Industrial waste is a saddening thing indeed.

I'm glad I was there when they were throwing away a Hafco saw table. Bit of a mission getting it off the ute at home, but it's here. Left out in the weather poorly covered so the cast bed is a nice flat plate of rust, and it's missing the guard, some handles have been broken off, but otherwise it works fine especially after a new belt.

Now that really makes me cry.

    Not determined enough mate.

Have a read of this story for dumpster diving determination and humiliation.

I know, I know, but I've had to become a lot more selective over the last few years. I really dont have much room at home, and I dont do that sort of work at work anymore.
In fact I'm currently in the process of culling a lot of stuff. I've been going through my trays that were full of fittings and fasteners and other miscellaneous crap and having a serious cull. I getting rid of stuff that I haven't used in the 30 odd years since I first acquired it.
I've also gone through my tray of self tappers and got rid of almost all the slotted heads. They are a PIA to drive in with a power driver, even with a good driver bit with a sleeve, and with my arthritus they are too hard to drive in by hand.
I've found a double handfull of bright mild 1/4 BSF set screws and bolts of various lengths (they were bright 30 years ago but they have a slight amount of flight rust on them now).
More 1/4whit bolts screws and nuts than you can poke a stick at. Same in brass. etc. Steel and gal pipe fittings etc etc. I'm only going to keep a small selection.
I'll try and sell the excess brass stuff on gumtree for basically scrap price but all the good steel stuff I'll give away if I can or scrap if I can't. Anything that looks even a little bit dodgy or if its an orphan goes in the scrap bucket.
I've just got so tired of not being able to find stuff when I need it. The saddest part for me is I've moved all this crap 4 times in the last 10 years.

But - to cheer you up, I told one of the other techo's about the scrap bin and he's going to have a scrounge today. I'll go and help him if he needs a hand.

That's a good thing and I need to start doing that. I have to keep reminding myself that especially on 1/8th acre housing lots like ours, space is a premium and the cheapest space rent for most stuff is to be had at retail stores or salvage yards.

    That's a good idea.
I've gotten a lot more ruthless about rusty fixings and these usually get chucked out rather than saved.

Good luck with all that, but remember to leave some time for projects.

dead right there Bollie....looks like it has a water cooled head also.

However those flange fittings etc and connector fittings look like brass...if so its probably a old freon comp as ammonia doesnt like anything but steel.

could be an old methyl chloride?..

    maybe s02?...

I'll take your word on it as I'm not a fridgy. It could have come from the refridge dept or F&M. If F&M they were probably using it as a fitting exercise -cutting caskets (joints) or something like that.

All those bits of cast iron would be perfect for the small flat belt pulleys I'm turing to restore my drills. Nothing beats free! So far away or I'd be happily diving in that dumpster. The less money you have the money incentive to dive in dumpsters. Although the girlfriend gets pretty mad at me for what I put in the boot of her car

Unfortunately most of my spare time is spent renovating the old house atm. I dont have problems doing that sort of stuff but its not my favourite.
Another part reason for the big cull is to try and reduce the amount of stuff in the shed which is only 6M X3M in the hope of creating enough space to move my mill into there. Currently its in the garage under the house, unusable. Where its been for the last 2&1/2 years. I haven't really needed it in that time so now I'm starting to question if I really need it at all. I've spend more money moving it around over the last 6 years than what I originally paid for it. So far I've only done about 3 small jobs on it and they were in my other life. I know that if I get rid of it though, I'll never be able to afford to get another one later if I decide that I want one again.
    aaaaah decisions, decisions.

    Ah the joys of hoarding.
Those lumps of mild steel round would be handy, now I have access to power hammers...
But don't worry- more turns up in other places!

A shed local to me is cluttered with quite exotic widgets, gadgets and 'jimcracks' ex University engineering experimental labs. A treasure to behold but also literally in the way!

    enjoy,

Ha. Throwing out 1/4" Whitworth bolts won't make me cry. But if you're throwing out any larger BSW stuff 5/16", 3/8", 7/16" 1/2" or 9/16", throw some my way please (especially square nuts and bolts). I'll pay postage.

    Cheers, Vann.

Vann - I dont have any square stuff. I might have some excess 3/8 whit stuff but wont be a lot. I'll have a look. What about smaller BSF eg 1/4 and possibly some larger BA in there as well. Also have a selection of various thread and angle grease nipples?

Bollie where do you work? Not the name of the company but what the company does & in what industry? I was thinking there may be an equivalent company in Melb, that may also turf out bits of Cast like that.
