I've been told that old insulation and VFDs don't always play nicely together because the old insulation can sometimes not withstand the square wave pulses - especially if it has been moved around and cracked in places.
    Best of both worlds?

Yes that is definate possiblity . The rewind would solve the dodgy insulation problem and at the same time keep the original mount

Is it a costly job? Ive never had a rewind done . Mike

I think it is a matter of talking to the local rewinder - depends on a number of factors (whether they like doing them that size, how busy they are and so on).
I haven't had a motor done for ages - from memory it was less than the cost of a replacement motor but that's not a good measure these days.

Let us know how you get on Andre

Today, I have pulled the large alloy pulley and its hub from the motor . The more I look at this antique motor, the less I am liking it .

I think most rewinders will tend to shy away from doing this job. The motor is a weird old shape , it doesnt fit in with the modern frame specs most rewinders would be familiar with .

The adapter plate and a new motor is looking more attractive Mike

You can buy a new 3 ph motor wound with either 2 or 4 or 6 poles . The number of poles determines the rpm

2 pole motors run at 2800

    4 pole run at 1440

    6 pole run at 960

If you wish to buy a secondhand motor , then it may take a while for you to find a 3/4 hp or 1 hp 6 pole motor .

If you buy a new motor , then no problem, just specify that you want a 6 pole motor with flange mount . Mike

Royce Cross are an SA business - if you need a motor picked up and dispatched I can do it for you if they are not able, but I still would like to see the price of a rewind as I that would be the way I would be looking first if it were my mill.

Sounds like the mill will be working soon

I bought a new motor and will make up aN adapter to mount the new motor . BTW the new motor wasn't much cheaper than your rewind with freight included mIKE
