Another P. K. Douglas Product
I have been helping a retired friend from the printing trades put a blade guard on his Douglas Compositors Saw. Took some pictures of it as I thought it might be of interest for people here.
The saw was used to cut metal type to size, my friend still uses it for this use as he is involved in a printing museum but he uses it to cut wood as well.
Mm.

Nice little machine, and it still looks in good nick. It's a shame they never used badges like those on the shapers.

I am getting old Phillip.
I had forgotten that I had seen one of those Douglas saws at a place called Camera Electronic Service over here in Northbridge.
I imagine the forgetfulness was as a result of that memory being eclisped by the story the owner told me about the installation of a DRO on his lathe. Out the back of this camera shop was a lean-to workshop and in it was the most pristine Colchester I have seen. Pristine until I heard the story and saw the installation. To fit the DRO, the owner had climbed up onto the bed and used a 9 inch Makita angle grinder to hack a recess in the rear top of the saddle. Nearly bought tears to my eyes.
I agree with Dave. The anodised badge would have been more subtle on our shapers.

Looks in very nice condition. Did anybody notice that the oiling label in the third photo is exactly the same label as on the shaper.
Also the colour is the same as my shapers.

Bob, I am pretty sure it is not this one
Fiber Grease
I am pretty sure it is a soda based grease but can provide you with nothing to back this up.

Douglas Products?
My friend with the saw said that the print museum he is involved with have one of these saws as well.
I am not familiar with P. K. Douglas Pty Ltd., what other products did they make besides shapers?
