Interesting drill press.
Groovers, I recently purchased this oversized drill press and was wondering if anyone knew anything about it from the pictures. The table is 900mm across, 75mm deep around the edge. The total thickness is 30mm.
To me it looks like a patch job but the price was right and location near. Any information appreciated. Mystery machine.
Hello Goodwoody,
Someone here will recognise the maker of the head, but it certainly looks as though it has been put together for a particular purpose, or salvaged from an incomplete machine. I can not see any provision to slew the head or table to left and right, unless the head is on a stub shaft. The table could have been adapted from a lathe faceplate or similar. Could still be a useful old machine with some TLC. Nice find , Combustor.Old iron in the Outback, Kimberley WA.

Interesting set up, and quite solidly made too. The drill head itself appears to be a fairly typical item from a 50s or 60s drill press. Looks like someone needed to drill holes in something that wasn't going to fit onto a standard drill press table.

+1 for a Richardson head, probably earlier than mine https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/richardson-e39-bench-drill-press-restoration-170650
Looks like a nice project. The first step towards knowledge is to know that we are ignorant.

The Drill.
Hi Damien,
Blu_Rock could be right, but it also looks a bit like a Waldown.
I'm certainly no expert.Regards,

Richardson
I would go for a Richardson Head.
That was the first thought when I saw the photo.

It looks very similar to mine. I will check for the holes for the ID plate on the side of the head. I know there is no Id plate present. Damien.

Could also be a Sterling head (made at the same place as Richardson's - I think. Both made in Westmead NSW).
