More Drill Stuff - A Tough To Progress Graft
My little Tough bench drill sits forlornly next to it's larger Victorian counterpart and to allow the Tough equal standing I am thinking of mounting it on the base of an expired Elliott Progress pedestal drill. The remainder of that drill has gone but I thought the base offered promise for some future project hence it's retention.
In it's day the back geared Progress would have been a useful drill. 45 - 2460 rpm.
The column socket diameter is a strange 2.725", the Tough column, 2.5". I need to make a sleeve.
I don't have any suitable pipe so I was thinking of turning down some 3 inch 1214 and maybe holesawing most of it's guts out using the Waldown and a 4 jaw chuck clamped to the drill table. Might be easier and quicker than drilling and boring on the lathe.
Any better ideas?

I'd save the solid stuff and try and find a bit of 1/8" wall pipe of around the right size. Turn the wall down to the right thickness and then split it to make a sleeve. It won't matter if there is a slight gap.

Hi bob
A short piece of schedule 40 steam pipe should do the trick.
I might have some. If you like I will have a look and you can have it.

No worries Bob
Only problem is I won't be able to have a look until Wednesday.

Hey Phil,
The Tough has been cowering alongside the blue drill for about 3 years. No rush.

Grafted
Rather than pressuring Phil for an offcut I thought I'd have a go at making a sleeve from a section of the Progress drill's column. Recycling.
What a prick of a job.
Used the Douglas vise to hold the sleeve during slitting. Biggest vise I have. Not hard to see why shapers and their vises part company.
The sleeve is sticking somewhere above the bottom of the socket. I'll sort it out when I paint the base. I have a Makita palm and a 1/2 sheet sander in the garden shed. I might see how they deal with the rust on the machined face of the base.
I need to create some working space around the drills. There's a challenge.

Hello Aaron,
The boring bar is a 3/4" Williams Agrippa in a Everede boring bar holder. A bit more info on the Everede here - https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/vi...o-many-132298/

Hi Bob
No pressure. I went hunting for the pipe and found it was just structural and not enough meat for the job. We also had some gas pipe with more than enough meat, sadly this has been thrown out. I then asked my 'scrounger' if he knew of any and he is confident. Great that you can recycle though and if he does turn up with some then it can go into stock as I am clearly out of that size

Bob,
Just to give us a guide, how large is the sleeve?
Having a boring bar holder like that would be nice, but i have made several dedicated boring bar holders, keyed to the compound "T" and bored in place with the lathe so they are dead on center (for tipped bars anyway). I had a quick look on Yankbay and there were several everede's, but at alot more than what you paid.

Hello Ewan,
From my initial post - " The column socket diameter is a strange 2.725", the Tough column, 2.5" "
I cut off a short length of the original Progress column with my 300 buck bandsaw then drilled the centre out with a 1" drill in the tailstock. The extended cross slide on my lathe sits 4mm higher than the standard slide. The Everede eccentric sleeve in it's lowest position was too high. I ended up using the boring bar positioned at about 15 degrees above the horizontal centreline with the bar rotated to the appropriate angle.
I don't know what the steel was. Tougher than 1214, maybe something like 1030. The swarf came off in long strands. Not as lethal as the strand like 4140 swarf but I can tell you there was plenty of it. I had to continually resharpen the non descript HSS cutter.
