    Default Dropped my test indicator

While setting up the new chuck on the Scahublin 102 I knocked my CTC test indicator and it crunched onto the lathe stand.

Dead as a Dodo - no movement, so I thought that was cactus.

Too bad, at least it was only a cheapie, so I ordered another bit more up market cheapie from CTC and that was that.

Anyway, the next day I was looking at the broken indicator and wondered if it was repairable. This type of thing generally never works again after I open it up, but I thought why not have a go.

So I got the tiny cover screws out and then the ones that hold the mechanism cage in place, and straight off noticed a long spring that was not connected. The jarring had bounced it off it's peg.

Put it all back together, and it actually works good as new.

Who would have thought that ?

Might have to get myself a set of small watchmakers screw drivers for this sort of job.

So now it looks like I will have two test indicators

Will have to send the Pope an email as this definitely qualifies as a miracle.

    Hi Rob,

    That's uncanny!
I have a measuremax DTI that I dropped onto the chip tray of my lathe a few months back. It broke so I too took it apart. I couldn't see any damage but it did appear as though a spring or something was missing that held the catch against the lever. I never found that mythical spring, so still it sits gathering dust in a drawer!

    Hi Simon,

Yes, mine just hit the drip tray with the probe.

Makes you wonder if a Mitutoyo would fare any better.

I did notice after reassembly that it's critical to get the two locating pins for the probe fulcrum just right for side play/thrust on the offset bush at the pivot point.

This bush sets/stops the side play and makes the little cam gear on the internal lever align with the roller gear in the mechanism.

    Cheers

    Rob

Have done the same thing with the Starret DI I have after servicing my chuck and retesting it last week. Bumped the magnetic mount while it was off and away the whole lot went onto my lap and floor bound As far as I could tell it only hit the side and face of the DI, still it was not working as it should. Pulled it all apart the and undone a few things re-aligned them and all is well again.

A Mitutoyo does not fare any better. I dropped a .0001" indicator onto my surface plate it still works but you can feel stick inside so I don't trust it no more

Andre I am a newbie and bought the Starret 2nd hand it was sticky when I got it, also the face was loose. I decided to have a go and open it up. To my surprise I found fine grit inside and yes the needle was sticking. A good clean was all it required. In doing that it gave me the confidence to again open it when I dropped it, One to check for bent shaft, Two to adjust and clean again.

Then I used to as a kid open old watches and clocks up and explore the inner workings.

I hear the infestation of chronic camera shortage syndrome (CCSS) once confined to certain areas of Victoria is spreading northwards. I think we are safe in SA, NT, TAS and WA due to the natural barriers separating us but it shows the importance of border security and quarantine. Be alert but not alarmed!

Don't be too sure. I cross the border on a daily basis via obscure back roads. There is no border security at all. I am somewhat concerned as I am on the path, so to speak, of the South and Westward drift of this scourge. I am actually in Victoria. I believe there is a major conspiracy happening that extends all the way to the Global Positioning System organisation. I had not worked this out until I read your post Michael. When I approach the border under the GPS navigation system, the screen refuses to show a crossing point. It tries to get me to go another way, even if this adds 100km to my trip.

On the other hand, maybe this is a security measure to try to thwart the insidious creep of this terrible infestation. I need to think long and hard about this whole matter. You have certainly given me food for thought.

Be Alert! Your country needs more Lerts.

I dropped my CTC dial test indicator with the mini mag base attached. It landed on the tip of the probe. The probe broke clean off. End of the road.

Have you noticed that all greenery, trees, shrubs etc stops at the Vic border as you enter SA.

It's almost like, OK the rest is just desert from here on, this is far enough, let those South Aussies have that crap country, whack up the border sign, and lets get to the pub for a beer.

    Victorians.

Yeah, I keep wondering about that. No incentive to stay there. What a s%^t hole.

I still regard myself as a South Aussie, as we do little more than reside over the border, so I know about the secret.

I was under the impression that Adelade was only 1/2 behind vic. Last time I visited it seemed more like 50 years....
