    Default Drummond round bed lathe

    The first thing I have to say is I know nothing about metal turning. I did make a center punch at high school 45yrs ago.

    I picked up this lathe a few yrs ago on a building demolition site. It was in pieces and scattered in different rooms so I could be missing some parts. I put it together as best I could then left it under the bench and have only just pulled it out with a thought of using it to make ferrules for wood chisel handles and other small simple projects.

    Is it worth fixing it up
    What size motor is needed and do I use a flat belt drive or can I use a vee belt
    In Adelaide where can I get a tool holder and chuck cheap

    Photos to follow as iPad won't allow attatchments(probably something I did wrong)

    Hello Rat,

    With a bit of spit and polish you'd have a neat little lathe. If you haven't looked on Tony Griffiths' website, here's a link, should cover most things you need to know.

    Whilst Tony sells reproduction handbooks they tend to be stiffly priced. An online search should reveal a downloadable version.

    For the chuck and other bits it might be worth having a look around Redwood Machinery on South Road near Regency Road, they have all sorts of old machinery there in varying states of repair. They are not open on Saturday's so you'd have to drop in during the week.

    Do a nice resto and take care of it and enjoy. From some detailed reading and comparisons, I believe you have a very unique version! Once its cleaned and photographed, I think Tony will be very interested to see it and may help you out with a manual in exchange for your permission to publish your photos. When the time comes, ask him.
