    Default eBay wins and losses.

In the last few days, I have had 1 win and another which should have been a win, but it turned into a loss, with eBay.
Firstly I "won" a band-saw, after having had discussions with the seller with regard to his "partially dismantling it (removing the table and strapping it flat to the main body of the unit, in order to reduce the volume, and also the chance of damage) and then skidding it up, before delivering it to the freight depot, for which we agreed on the charges for this service. These discussions took place before I had bid on the item.
I subsequently had the highest bid, and had another friendly chat with the seller, with me agreeing to find out for him where the Toll Express depot he was to use was located, and also whether he had to communicate in any way with Toll, before turning up with the band-saw. I phoned back the next day as arranged, only to be told that although he was very sorry, he was unable to fulfil his part of the bargain because of time constraints. (He is moving house, which he had told me previously and also mentioned in his eBay listing, so I don't doubt him on this). It is just bloody frustrating to win the item for a very good price and even with the worst case scenario in terms of freight charges $400 - 740 depending on how much volume was saved by relocating the table for the ride south, it would have been a great buy I think.
This is the eBay link to it. Jeffwood bandsaw - eBay, Equipment, Machinery, Woodworking, Industrial. (end time 21-Jul-10 21:13:19 AEST)

On a hopefully more positive note, I snagged this shaper, Metal Shaping Machine - eBay, Equipment, Machinery, Metalworking, Industrial. (end time 25-Jul-10 19:48:15 AEST) and hopefully nothing will go wrong with this transaction. I don't know much about the brand, it's Spanish, does anyone own one and are there any strongly recommended texts on driving one. As I'm not trained in their use, I'd appreciate any guidance either written or DVD format that any of our more experienced members may suggest, before I go playing too much.
And I do apologise Woodlee for not giving you the heads up on this one, but when I saw her, I really hoped that no-one else would!
While were on about eBay did anyone here get the nice (for the money) little Dean Smith and Grace for $1600?

I was sorely tested but was being counselled by the Supreme Commander, who has no understanding of old iron and its rarity in these parts, at least this kind of old iron, whereas bills and demands for cash are always with you. Cheers all,

Yeah, I was looking lustfully at the DSG lathe. Bit far away for me and I was a little concerned about the gear issues. Besides that, I don't really have anywhere to put it. Damb!!!!

    Cheers

No apologies needed regarding the shaper ,just make sure you get all rust of the ways before you run it .Looks like surface rust only .Once you get it cleaned up ,then you can make recompense by sending it onto me.
Id have trouble justifying the machine to the Missus any way ,I just laid out a wad of money on a new tablesaw.

The lathe looks almost identical to my Edgwick tool room lathe ,probably of the same vintage .Speeds are similar range.
    A good solid machine.
Check the lathes Uk website he has manuals and stuff for all types of machines , a bit pricey but if you need a manual its probably worth it.

Thanks for the good wishes and advice on the shaper which hopefully will soon be mine and in my possession. Since losing the band-saw I am not counting the chickens before they hatch, so it won't really be mine till I have it in my shed!
Stustoys, I know what you mean, if I hadn't lost the band-saw, I may not have gone as hard at the shaper. I , like Enfield Guy, was very interested in the DSG, as well. Had it still had no bids with time running out, I would have had it for $1500. It eventually got a bid, and the bidder must have only put a low, maybe 1500 on it and then thought that someone else might beat him to it at the last moment, so he upped his bid to a figure of $1600 or more.
Good thing he did too, as although I didn't hold any real hope of success, and being aware of the strains I had already put on our budget, I put a bid of 1600 in the final seconds of the auction. He must already have had at least that much on it so I lost out on that one. I would have had to employ some fancy footwork with my Domestic Goddess if I had won it as besides the 1600 dollars, i'd have to have found possibly another grand to get it home. Like you Enfield Guy, I don't have room for the shaper let alone the DSG, but tomorrow morning at 0800 a fellow from down the road is coming with his excavator to prepare a pad for an ex- refrigerated container, a 20' hi cube, which is to be temporary accommodation for it. A proper shed remains on the drawing board, or is that the back burner. As it is I will only get about half of the container as I have to partition it for storage of household clutter, too precious to throw out but used only infrequently or even owned by adult children now overseas.
Yes Dave it is one with a 450mm stroke, and for anyone interested the link below gives the specs for the machine - mine is the smallest of this bunch.

Thanks to you too Kev (Woodlee) for the advice re cleaning rust before operating and before sending it up to you.
Finally thanks Plushy for the heads up on manuals - I don't know yet if the original one comes with it, but very handy to know a local source. I do know a guy in U.K. Fazerblazer, who does this sort of thing and even sends PDF files via e-mail if you prefer and is very reasonable pricewise. Fazerblazer is his eBay moniker, his real name is Steve, and I have found him most pleasant. He has loads of manuals if you are chasing one for older machines.
Thanks to all for the encouragement and other assistance, Cheers for now,
    Ropetangler
