    Default Another elusive article

I was talking to a friend the other day and DROs were raised and the amount of space they take up. Since that conversation I can vaguely recall a story in MEW or similar where a lathe owner decided to make up a new cross slide for their Myford and hide the DRO scale inside it.
Does anyone remember that one and can give me an issue number etc to track it down? - It may have only been a couple of pictures as part of coverage for one of the model shows. Regardless, I'd be interested in more details if anyone has them.

Michael, you probably mean the article in MEW 150 (May 2009) page 36, entitled "A Myford Super 7 Topslide with Digital Readout"? Ken Wilson is embedding a miniature scale into the innards of a cross slide.

Edit: To find articles I vaguely remember havin long ago seen.... I use the MEW index website, which you can find here:

Are the articles copyright? If not, would it be possible to set up a library with articles like the one Michael wants!!!!
Would be handy for up and coming hobby machinists, for future reference.

Kryn, they are of course copyrighted. But MEW issue 001-163 .pdf scans can be downloaded for free as a single torrent. That is illegal, unless of course one was to already own the printed copies 001-163, and one was just after a digital archive that is easy to look up on a pc or tablet...... If one does not know what Torrents are and how to use, just ask your kids (you need something like utorrent on your computer).

By Kids I mean just the younger generation, those that do not know anymore what a typewriter looks like. Maybe ask younger colleagues at work. If all fails, Google "how do torrents work?" and read your way through the many answers provided. Unfortunately there are legal issues with downloading copyrighted material. That is why you will not find the topic openly discussed in a forum like this. In any case make sure you fully understand what "using a proxy" and "seeding" means, before considering getting started.

Do not get me wrong. There is nothing illegal by using the torrent protocol. It is just that torrents happen to be the preferred method to download copyrighted material such as movies and music and books without paying for it. If you download material for which you already paid, there is no legal issue. In our case, if you already own the paper copy of a magazine, you have paid for its copyright and are entitled to have a digital copy for your own use.
