    Default Flat belting

A while back I think it was Bruce (Abratool) was asking about Coacholine. I finally found the tin. Stuart (Stustoys) also asked about lacing. I finally took some pics of how we do it.

Phil, some of those old belts are pretty long end to end, cows must be a lot smaller these days

How do they skin the beast to get those long belts ?

Instead of skinning them do they cut the belt from around the beast in a spiral fashion ?

    Hi Phil,
    Thanks for that.
Does the lacing have to be leather? Do they still make leather show laces? would they do?
Any rubs of thumb about hole spacing? i.e. how wide is the belt in the two close up pictures?

I still have a old belt for my drill. Who knows, maybe I will put it back on.

    HI shed,
They used to get belts from bullocks because they were so big but camels were another favourite source. I think you are right about the spiral cut but I can't be sure.
Say Hi to Healesville for me. I grew up just around the corner. Well actually I dont think I ever grew up

    HI Stuart
Copper wire can be used for lacing but I don't know the weave used. I have it somewhere. We make our own lacing by trimming down a hide to suit the belt. Not sure whether shoe laces would do as the leather isn't the quality it used to be. Something about the tanning process. Doesn't mean you shouldn't try it though. Leather tonging might be worth a shot too. Probably available from the craft shops. The sample belt in the close up is about 4" wide. Normally the end of the lace isn't tied in a knot, it is just slipped back under a part of the lacing. The spacing does have a rule of thumb which is generally as many turns as you can without weakening the belt which like most old skills was just that, an old skill. Most important is the first row of holes not being too close to the edge. I normally come back about an inch from the edge on small belts up to 6" wide. The wad punches used for lacing are oval in shape and not round. Oval punches are getting harder and harder find.

    Hi Stuart,
I just found this. It's from and old 11th edition of the Machinery's Handbook.
If I remember correctly you have an old edition as well.

    Hi Joe,
in the interim you could try this. It's on archive.org. It's not great but it's there. Archive.org used to be fantastic until google realised they could make it completely useless by making it incredibly difficult to save books.

    HI Stuart,
I used to do a lot of scarfed belts (mainly synthetic) years ago and if done right are outstanding. One thing is the diameter of the pulleys need to be a decent size or else it's a whole world of pain. Also make sure you scarf the belt according to which way the belt is going to run. One last thing is to make sure you have some kind of tension adjustment.

You should know me by now
