Thread: HAUSER 3SM

Hi Privet,

For what its worth it doesn't look like part of any 3SM grinder I've seen. I'm not sure its accurate enough for a jig grinder(but then maybe they have given up on the super accurate lead screws and rely on DRO's instead, though that would be strange)
That aside, it sure looks pretty.
Using it as a mill sure wont do it any good..........but it would like do light milling for a a long time.
My manual calls for Mobil Vactra Oil No. 2 on the ways, but that will be old vactra 2, its changed over the years.

It could be a great help depending on its age.
Does it have a picture/drawing of the machine?

Well ok the handle is different and the wheel motor is electric(mine is air, though who knows maybe you can fit an electric motor to mine), but the important part is it has the electric rather than hydraulic head(eccentric and stroke). Even that page is a great start over what I have re lubrication. So when you have a minute a copy would be greatly appreciated. Do you have the machine to go with the manual?

The manual is pretty thick, although some stuff is a duplication of other Hauser manuals.
I can lend you the manual if you just want to photocopy it.

Turns out Hauser did make an "Rectangular table for contour grinding with direct reading to : 0001" " which is I guess what you have.

Shame the guys that pulled the gearbox out didn't have a manual, it looks like you don't have to cut the back of the machine off to get it out.

The serial number on Peters machine is No8 and if I had to guess I'd say mine predates his. His machine has a large plate on one of the control boxes, mine hasn't ever had a plate there.

Turns out one of the drives is a variator.............

One plus from the manual is it "looks" like there was another spindle that would allow grinding up to 100mm dia. So I just need to make one

Where is the variator? I don't recall seeing anything resembling one while poring over the Hauser during my visit.

Of Peters machine? It looks just like mine pretty much, except for the name plate which I stupidly didn't take a picture of . Though a may get another chance. The variator must be on the tiny side as size goes, it's for the stroke speed, inside the gearbox in the head.

Working my way through Pete's manual, it's dated 6/54 but I doubt its actually the manual that came with his machine as the test spec pages are blank and there are some extra pages from another manual.

As far as cutting the back off the machine, the machine in the manual has a hole in the back to allow the pulley to be removed from the gearbox, mine doesnt have that hole, so it would seem to be an update by Hauser

Now I have the lubrication specs I need some more oil

Slides and screws - Sunoco Way lubricant P 47 or Gargoyle Vactra oil extra heavy L (got that or something

Gearboxs - Gargoyle D.T.E extra heavy. Got that (or something close to)

Most other things including oil bath for exterior sleeve of the main quill - Gargoyle D.T.E Light (I'll have to get some)

Variator box - Caltex Regal AA(Ro) (there is a note in pencil. Rando oil Caltex AA lighter than SAE10) (I'll have to get some of that as well.

From the manual it seems that the "small grinding spindle" can be unscrewed and replaced with a larger one with a slide to allow diameters up to 4" to be ground. Hopefully mine is the same and once the correct tools are made I can make another motor and slide. Which should make the machine a little more useful.

What was your serial No Stu? It juts so happens there is a 3SM with a J head on it (it was on ebay) very nearby to me now (not mine, just close), with the manual. It's a really low serial so i presume its an early one. Power rise and fall is not working which is a real pain.....

J head? don't know what you mean.

Mine doesn't have a serial number and appears to never have had one. Peters machine has a large brass plate screwed/rivited onto the control box below the solenoid. Mine doesn't have any holes in that cover, so never had a plate there. Maybe a number will turn up when I get the table off.

At 170 turns to the inch, power Z is something you wouldn't want the be without. I moved it from bottom to top once by hand, that was enough for me lol

Did it have a large circular handle on the Z feed? You didnt happen to see any specail spanners?
