Lou, it's more than boots, it's SOCKS too. Get comfortable hiking socks to reduce the soreness, they help reduce the 'bruised' feeling.

yep, you are going to hurt for a while!

Holeproof explorers are my choice for being on my feet, it is worth putting sport insoles in too.

My steel caps are rossi's I think, sport insole after they broke in to stretch them a bit, explorer socks, lots of years on my feet either in the yard or @ real job in hospital (doc martens there)

I know just what you are feeling Lou. I have spent the last ten years out of the builing business as a full timer, and have been at it part time, in between joinery shop, love jobs, jobs for FOF'S and good paying jobs.

I wear slip on Blunnies, with two pairs of explorer type socks.

Spend as much as you can afford..I wouldn't think twice about spending $300 -$400 on boots. Made in the USA is the thing to look for. Lace ups, waterproof, Gortex lined so they're breathable and a good sole that can be resoled..cause the boots will outlast the rubber. Merrell. Wolverine, Redwings and Vasque .

By golly you have to look for them though.

I cheat and get purely hiking boots that don't usually have a steel toe. I have never been on a site yet where I have been asked if my toes were steel capped - the boots look so chunky everyone just assumes.- of course some people have an ideological belief that steel caps are essential...me I just watch my feet.

BTW I would get about- 3 years out of a good set of boots and never have the lower back pain associated with being on your feet too long,

EDIT as everyone says Don' forget the explorer socks!

The two pairs of socks is a very good idea. For a number of years I watched a group of students from my wife's school attempt an 80 km walk in one day!. The students who start out with two pairs of well fitting explorer type socks always do better than those that don't!

    Cheers

From my experience in the trade and in my workshop, it is not only what shoes you are wearing but what you are standing on. I recall all the machines in the old workshop had wooden pallets in front of them so we weren't standing on the cold conrete.

If you have hot feet I reckon the explorers make your feet sweat (& stink) too much.

I'm on my feet all day on concrete, & thick all cotton sport socks work for me.

Get 'em at those "Aussie Socks" type kiosks at the shopping centres, or at the local market.

I have the same boots and they are first class. The best boots I have ever had with the possible exception of RM Williams boots. Sadly since RM died they have become real yuppie boots. Very highly priced and no working man could hope to afford a pair.

Steel Blue make a brilliant boot. Of course important too to have heavy wool socks. Don't think synthetics are any good but teenage girls like them because they are pretty even if they don't last long.

I don't wear steel caps but have always had good luck with TWO pairs of shoes, changed at lunch. Gives the insoles a chance to spring back and the shoes a chance to dry out before you put them on the next morning. That and a really good mattress are worth their weight in chiropractors.
