Looks like a great book. Boy they really made a wide range of stuff. The golden age of manufacturing?
I have a pair of Gypsy Major engine blocks and cranks under the house in the sand right now, I would eventually like to get them running. My Dad had new cylinders and cranks but gave them away in the 1980's to a young guy restoring an Auster locally so he could rebuild the motor. The steel cylinders were stored in waxed brown paper and were in perfect condition after 30 to40 years storage in the tropics. I understand a common modification is to fit a compatible GM piston which has an oil scavenger ring which prevents the smoke and oil loss from the engine.

Graziano, the mod is to the standard pistons for the engine where the oil control ring slot is widened and holes are drilled through the skirt of the piston. The rings used are from a truck engine (the exact one evades me). Brings the oil burn down to about 1 litre per 5 hours.

Come to think of it, here's a couple of peanuts (the boss and I - excuse the faces) in front of a tiger that got that upgrade last week (as well as going from 130 to 145hp).

If you're interested in parting with the blocks and cranks, shoot me a PM alternatively, if you still want to get them running, I could get you in touch with a few chaps that could source parts for you.

Bryan, any recollection of the Auster's rego, and where it's based these days?

On topic though, that book looks particularly interesting. I'd be very keen to read up on the parts covering aero related activities.

    Cheers, Tom.

VH-BNA, aka 'Banana', seems to now be registered at Gawler. Shoot me a PM if you want to know more. Or better, an email.

Cheers lads. I asked in case we may have seen it at all in our travels - as we service a few. Can't say we have for this girl though. Looked her up and found a lovely picture of it at Parafield in the 60's. It certainly had a nice paint scheme.

Hi Tom, thanks for the info on the modification, it's been a while since I heard of it so my recall of what was done was off a bit. The engine blocks are still there, I had a look but I suspect they'll be well beyond all chance of servicing for aircraft use. Forty years of sitting in damp sand in the tropics would have done them in.
