Default Tap & die, wanted to borrow.

If this request is in the wrong place, my apologies.

I need to repair a part on my old Singer boot patcher, and need to retap a threaded hole.

As best as I can measure, the mating screw is No.6x40 UNF with an ID of approx. 0.14".

If a kind member could lend me a bottoming tap and die, I would be pleased to hear from you.

Would only need tap and die for 5 minutes and can't justify buying them for a one off job.

    I'm in Heidelberg, Melbourne.

    Default Singer threads

    Hello Ken,
you might have a lot of trouble trying to get a tap for Singer products as they used non standard threads. The tpi will be a common number but the thread outside diameter will not match with any standard thread series. A Singer repair agent who has been around a long time might be your best bet as he might have the correct taps for his own repairs.

    Phillip.

    Hi Phil,

I appreciate your advice, and can only hope it is a standard size thread. I guess I'll only find out when I can borrow a die and tap. Finding an old Singer mechanic for industrial machines, may be more difficult than milking a cow with a spanner.

When I worked in the Special School, we had a Singer Industrial of 40's to 50's vintage which was serviced by a guy in Heidelberg Road around the Ivanhoe shooping strip area. Sorry I can't be more specific but it might be worth a small time in hunting.

Hi Malb, it would be great to hunt down this service guy you mentioned. Any more info?

In the mean time, I no longer need to borrow a die and tap. The job is done and dusted. I managed to purchase the last tap on the shelf, from North East Industrial for a low cost.

No.6x40 UNF was the correct size.

I appreciate the help I've received.

    Ken
