The first job is to replace the lever handles with aluminium and/or brass ones, it improves the feel of the lathe no end.

Second job is to replace the saddle clamp bolt with a tee-bar, it saves heaps of time when parting off.

I hope You enjoy Your New Lathes Eskimo and Brendan. I don't know about Gavin, but I didn't have any problems with My Cabinet Stand - nothing to say though that You didn't get a bodgy stand though Eskimo. At least Your AL340 arrived intact Brendan, I had initially ordered a AL-340A, but the Carrier BROKE IT. All I got to see of it was photos of the Damage any way they Paid Hare & Forbes for a new Lathe and as the AL-960B with DRO was on Special I paid the Extra and bought that.
    Happy Machining Guys.

My stand was fine, I just needed to raise it a couple of inches so I didn't have to bend over the lathe.

Jeez youd have to be doing well to break a lathe.

My stand is fine for height, it will be raised an inch or so when I have levelling feet on it but that will be all I require. I am surprised cos I am 6 foot 2 and thought it might be a bit small based on what I had heard round the traps but its comfortable for me to work on.

    Default Broken lathe

    HI,
Here is the Pics as Promised. Ray Murphy who does Contract Work for Hare & Forbes Inspected the Lathe and it was a Write Off. There is More Damage than what You can actually see. For the Damage that was done to the Lathe I believe that the Freight Companys Forklift Operator was Driving to fast and was Travelling with the Load to High off the Ground. I still ended up with a New Lathe so I do not hold any Grudge against the Freight Company. It is still a bit saddening looking at the Pics of what was to be My Lathe.

What a tragedy. I wonder what ever became of the machine? A lot of that stuff would be repairable, however the crack in the cross slide is a bit concerning.

    HI,
Initially I was going to Buy the Lathe back of the Freight Company for $750.00 and Dismantle it and Sell off the Parts. That didn't eventuate for some reason, so I advised the Freight Company to get Hare & Forbes in Melbourne to put it in their Shop and try and Sell it for them. Some of the Damage that You can see would have been Repairable. Ray found that the Headstock was Cracked and out of Alignment, The Tailstock was Damaged due to it falling of the Lathe, The Cross Slide Screw was Bent, The Bed had a twist in it ?. I suspect that the Headstock would have been Damaged internally as a result of the Impact on the Gear Levers.
