Machine Vise.
I was wondering today what a shaper machine vise is and how it differs from say a milling vise? Just a curiosity based question.

Generally they will have a square base that is secured in four places, the vice can swivel on the base.
The screw that moves the sliding jaw normally extends to the back of the fixed jaw, where a milling vice the screw only goes as far as the sliding jaw.

Thanks that gives me a good idea. I assume the shaper vice would be be required to take a stronger force or side load.

Hello dsel74,
Here are some pictures of my AI Hembrug shaper with its original vice. Not a big production shaper, but rather a toolroom shaper. The vice is proportioned accordingly (base 160 x 160 mm, total height 90 mm) but you get the idea.

Hi Dale,
Shaper vice(generally) have the thread in tension, on mill vices its in compression.(which might just be repeating what PC said in a different way)Many theories as to why.
