    Thanks for the reply...
    What I want to do is from machining polyurethane and plastics to threading small metal dowls etc. My budget, would like to spend as little as possible but as much as I need to.
    Everyone tells me about the great deal they got on _bay but some made in china, some good old 2nd handers for good money.
    I'm no expert on these and don't pretend to be so would just like to know whats around and available.

    Having chased up the machining plastics info through a local vendor ( for school engineering projects ) their info was that one should go for carbide tooling at the plastic was murder on HSS tool edges.

    This was for inserts for a soft faced hammer if that s a help.

    It follows then, that the lathe that you purchase may well need to have enough power ( electric motor power) to drive the carbide tooling.

    The advice from the fitter (Teacher) at the previous school was that lathes fitted with carbide tooling need more grunt than their HSS fitted versions.
