Where to get metal stock?
Hi everyone,
I am looking to find supplies of brass (1' thick rod), Aluminium (blocks) and tool steels. I've looked online and found a lot of sites in the US and an ebay store based in the uk, but nothing here in Aus. Anyone able to recommend a supplier?
Cheers.

I've just ordered some square aluminum and bright mild rod from Ukroy on Ebay. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Its convenient, but I don't know if its value for money yet.

Try Interlloy Pty Ltd - Alloys & Special Steels and Bohler-Uddeholm Australia for tool and other specialized steels. They also supply cast iron.
Austral Wright Metals is a supplier of stainless steel, aluminium, copper brass, bronze, nickel alloys, duplex alloys, titanium alloys and speciality metals.

Bohler-Uddeholm Australia - NSW
For tool steels. They used to have an $80 minimum purchase and that was a few years ago, so could be more now.woodworm.

I've used this company before. Ezimetal - Steel & Aluminium, buy only what you need..
They deal with any size stock, and are happy to sell small amounts to hobbiest.
I had a better experience at raymond terrance than mayfield, but both were good.My blog: ~ for the love of wood ~ - http://theloveofwood.blogspot.com/

Hi mjsaand,
For brass rod, I would try George White, try here www.georgewhite.com.au
For tool steel, it depends on what you want, I have been buying small quantities of O1 tool steel from here Precision Ground O1 Oil Hardening Flat Ground Stock The prices are reasonable, especially with the dollar as high as it is, and freight is not too bad if you are only buying small quantities.
I would be also interested if anyone has an Australian supplier for O1 tool steel.
Regards
Ray

Thanks everyone,
Hugely helpful replies, as seems to be a pattern here =) Really appreciate everyone's suggestions, thanks for taking the time to reply.
pipeclay in regards to your question the materials I am looking for right at this moment are:
a 1' diameter brass rod of 2' in length
a 200 x 100 x 20 mm piece of aluminium
a supplier of O1 tool steel (this would be for a project once I have built up some skills)
I am just starting out in metalworking - trying to figure out how to source the basics =)
Cheers.

I could do both for $80 plus postage, the Ali would be 25mm thick.
In regards to the O1 what size were you after.

Bohler at Cardiff ( Newcastle) sell in small quantities, I have never had a problem with minimum orders.

Problem with living in Sydney, every bugger assumes you've got far too much money and that they're really only trying to relieve your problem.

I know for a fact that OneSteel Melbourne has a warehouse full of nice steels like 4130, 4140, 12L14 etc. .Despite this my local OneSteel distributor denies that they have these steels. Melbourne will not sell into local territories so none of it gets sold up here as a result. In fact I'll ring Cairns now and see what they say this time round.

Can I assume the brass you are after is 1" diameter and 2' in length? If you actually mean 1' and 2' then at $80, Pipeclay, I'll take ten!
But seriously there is a ton of engineering firms that'll do small pieces for you not at massive prices.
I also used to buy small quantities of various stock from a local engineeing supply house, you never know what they have hidden away at the back of the storage area.
