It's not the same at all.

Aluminum is US English spelling for Aluminium and is recognised by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (of which I am a member and an Australian Rep) as an acceptable variant.
This means it can officially be used in international law, commerce, engineering, trade etc.

    "Sodder" is just ignorant/lazy speech.

The name of Aluminium has had multiple variants over the years.
Even the officially accredited discoverer of Al, British Scientist Sir Humpry Davy called it Aluminum.
The etymology of Al makes for interesting reading, for those with the Wikipedia entry for Al has a section on it.

I do quite a few YouTube videos, and I'm forever getting Americans telling me how they fall off their chair laughing when I say aluminium.

In fact they tell me they actually love the way we say it, but just find it hilariously funny.

The worst that can happen is you will fail.
    But at least you tried.

Sodder is a dialectic variation - I have never heard an american say solder. Ever. Even electronics guys.

There a several contradictions on element naming - many don't all end in "ium" and several that actually end in just "um" , e.g. molybdenum and lanthanum.

I have worked with many americans and worked in the US for a couple of years, the educated ones will all say "solder" unless maybe if they are from "Nu Giosey"
