Nutters in the workshop
Just wondering what other people do when nutters visit.
I have a tendency to accommodate for a while but quickly make excuses to have to be somewhere else.

I had a neighbor who would always hang about. This guy had a serious alcohol problem. He usually started drinking when he woke up and by 10 or so he was often slurring and staggering if he happened to have enough beer on hand. If I happened to be out working on something he would wander over without fail. I found over time that if I stopped working and talked to him he would rattle on about nothing for hours but if I kept working, never on dangerous or critical tasks of course, eventually he'd get bored and go bother somebody else or go home and fight with his girlfriend. Eventually he got thrown in prison for fighting with the police, ending my problem.

I'd start up a 9" angle grinder. That should work.
Never needed to do it though - perhaps I have a better class of visitor.......

Just tell them that you'll have to charge them an hourly rate if they stay. I'd start at $250 per hour.

Reminds me of the labour rate sign I used to see in a muffler shop years ago. It was something like
Hourly rate $4
If you watch $6
If you talk/advise $8
If you help $10

That was cheap rates back then Bob, at a guess, it would have been when decimal currency came in. My first pay was $12.60 '69 It cost me about $8.00 a week for fuel to go to work 20 miles a day.
I have a friend who comes around occasionally, that is in a motorised wheelchair, he had a stroke at 32, and tries to help with only a right hand, I give him an electric sander to play with on timber jobs. After about an hour and half, he's had enough and on his way home. He feels he's helped me out, so that's OK.

You have given him affirmation, encouragement, a sense of self worth and he sees you as a decent bloke, you haven't patronised him, you have built him up, Blessings to you and your friend

Rarely do I get unannounced visitors. If I do then it's usually a family member like my mum or my sister or even one of my neighbours. Quite frankly I hate working in my shed with another person. It's my time to be alone and enjoy my own company. I usually head into the house and offer a cup of coffee since it's probably been a while since I last saw that person. Simon
Girl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.
