    Sure ... Maybe.

I guess what I am trying to say is ... Those that bleat "government should subsidise" better be driving Aussie made.

Otherwise, their feelings are not THAT strong about maintaining the industry.

And, it means I pay twice !

    1. I have bought their cars
    2. Part of my tax goes to subsidise.

I dont mind at all that people choose the vehicle they want for their price, purpose, lifestyle etc.

I do mind when those same people bark and bleat that we should save the industry and the taxpayer should pay.

I do find it sad ... terribly sad ... But that's probably because I was closely tied to the industry for 13 or so years, and met some lovely people.

    Ok guys

The political stuff needs to stop right from now. There is potential for things to turn nasty. Play nice fellas.

From this point on, any post that gets political runs the risk of deletion . Enough said?

Just to clarify, Grahame, you mean off-topic rants about the major political parties? Complete with derogatory language? A la two posts ago?

Yes, a that was a bit inflammatory and OTT (the guy must've been watching too much Parliament Question Time on the telly).

But, to some extent many of the posts here have been 'political', from the 'suck it up you whinger' posts to the 'shutting down the car industry is madness' posts.

So hopefully as long as personal/party derogatory language isn't used and the comments remain on topic (wages, workplace, business conditions, manufacturing policy), then posts are ok?

It's a slightly edgy thread, a few sore noses, but hopefully you'll let it run.

It is not so much shutting it down is madness, it is madness to shut down such a major employer, but have no plan for the future...

What plan does any leader have for say 30 years from now? Everything seems to be just going from day to day...

I was reading an Ion Idriess book many years ago about the discovery of Broken Hill... When it was first discovered by a rural labourer, they sent the initial 10 tonnes or so mines sample ore to England for assessment... There were no facilities to laboratories to assay the samples here... It took a year or more apparently... And the mine was born...

Then we built an industrial empire... Tractors, cars, earthmoving machinery, ships, even electronic parts like resistors and such were made here...

From the days of just producing raw products then sent overseas for processing to doing a fair bit here....

Now ironically we are back to the days of being totally unable top process the raw materials here and they have to be sent overseas.... Even in my industry of beef cattle, processing of the beast into parts suitable for consumption is so expensive there is a massive market overseas for a basic raw material where they do the final fattening and processing them selves...

In the future at current rates what will happen is everything will be shipped overseas in a raw state then the other country value adds, and we reimport the finished product...

It is no secret the future is electronics and computers and science and technology... But we do not seem to be investing too much in it on the leadership level... Not for decades anyway..

No Naming political parties or political personalities. Just keep it general, no rants about specific parties.Lets keep it civil.

To OP, $810 a week sounds about normal for a fitter and turner.
There's better but also worse around.
Its only overtime rates that make up for what you don't earn, though they are under attack now.
Dont know what you were expecting, but higher pay requires shift work or FIFO mine machinery maintenance.
Beats $40 dollars a week Chinese machinists earn.
And that's why we don't make things here.
No one will pay for Australian made when Chinese made is half the cost.
